Thomas Adshead and Son, Ltd., were demonstrating their mobile hydraulic platforms, of the type described in Flightof May 6th this year. Among other regular exhibitors at Castle Bromwich wereW. H. Paul, Ltd., who, though their exhibits here were mainly of a domestic variety, in fact do a considerable amount of gas turbinesheet-metal work; Rotherham and Sons, Ltd., well known for caps, unions, repetition parts, instruments and instrument com-ponents; the Rubery Owen Organization, suppliers of—among many other things—aircraft materials, fittings and sub-assemblies;and British Aero Components, Ltd., whose display featured drill jig bushes and comparable parts. The Bristol Aeroplane Co., Ltd.,figured on the stand of the Bristol Engineering Manufacturers' Association, showing a very fine sectioned Proteus engine; andRolls-Royce, Ltd., on die "Derby for Industry" stand, had a sectioned Derwent. THE INDUSTRY Rotol-Messier Apprentices Rewarded AT the annual apprentice prize-giving of Rotol, Ltd., and British**• Messier, Ltd., the prizes were presented by Lt-Gen. Sir Ronald Weeks, chairman of Vickers, Ltd. In company with twoother directors of Vickers companies, Maj. Gen. Dunphie and Mr. G. R. Edwards, he flew from Weybridge in an executive Heron,but bad weather prevented the aircraft from reaching Staverton and the party had to land at South Marston and complete theirjourney by road. Two directors of the Bristol Aeroplane Co., Ltd. (and also of Rotol, Ltd.), Sir Reginald Verdon Smith andA. Cdre. F. R. Banks, flew over from Filton in a Bristol 173 helicopter.Sir Ronald was introduced by the managing director of Rotol, Ltd., Lt-Gen. Sir John Evetts, who also welcomed the visitorsfrom Weybridge and the principals of North Gloucestershire Technical College, Forest of Dean Technical College and otherofficials of educational establishments in the area. Sir John said that the company's apprentice scheme was only 16 years old, yetby die end of 1955 268 completed apprenticeships would have been recorded. In his speech, Sir Ronald Weeks said that he was glad tohave the opportunity of acknowledging the work which Rotol and British Messier had been able to do, and were doing, for theVickers organization. Addressing the apprentices, he referred to "what long-sighted management is trying to do for your benefit"and said it was up to each one of them to take full advantage of what was provided. When the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh paid their visit tothe City of Gloucester's recent centenary celebrations they saw an exhibition of local industries, and a display by Rotol, Ltd., wasone of the exhibits in which they took a particular interest. A member of the fair sex receiving an award at an apprentice prize- giving makes an unusual picture. Two were among Ordinary National Certificate recipients at the Rotol presentation (see above). Mrs. Digby- Worsley receives her prize from Lt-Gen. Sir Ronald Weeks. Ground Power for NATO TT has only recently become possible to publish some details con-•*• cerning the ground power units—or "energizers," as the U.S.A.F. call them—being supplied by Auto Diesels, Ltd., forthe starting of jet aircraft used by NATO air forces. Power is provided by a Rolls-Royce B.60 engine, stated to havebeen the only type which completely met the severe specification stipulated. Closely governed to 3,000 r.p.m., it develops 86 b.h p.and is flexibly coupled to a special Crompton Parkinson d.c. generator with a direct-coupled exciter. The continuous outputis 22kW at 28.5 volts (770 amp.) with an intermittent rating of 185 per cent full load current (1,425 amp.) for one minute. Ser-vicing and starting loads are possible at constant voltage supply; alternatively, constant current or current limitation control canbe selected to cater for the varied types of aircraft with which the unit is likely to be used. Current limitations can be effected at selected values of 800,1,000, 1,200 and 1,400 amp. When the unit is operated under constant voltage control the voltage is held constant at the end ofthe supply cables and at the aircraft termina's regardless of load current variations. Separate service and starting outputs areavailable as required. Normal overload, over-voltage and reverse current protection is provided. The whole equipment is mounted on a trolley and is weather-proofed. Pre-production models were subjected to extensive endurance and environmental tests, including cold- and hot-startoperation, rain, salt water and humidity tests. Auto Diesels, Ltd., of Uxbridge, Middlesex, co-operate withCrompton Parkinson, Ltd., in the manufacture of these units and the entire range is marketed under the name of CromptonParkinson-Auto Diesels. IN BRIEF Mr. C. E. D. Catley has recently travelled to Canada in order to superintend the setting up of a pilot plant for the manufacture of Hellermann sleeves, cable markers and other products. A new company, Hellermann (Canada), Ltd., is in course of formation. * * * B. Attewell and Sons, Ltd., makers of "R.L.A." laminated alu-minium shim material (A.I.D. and A.R.B. approved) have moved into a new factory, Reflection Works, Thorney Lane North, Iver,Bucks (Iver 1103-3; telegrams, Reflection, Iver). The company are also well known as makers of press too'.s, jigs and fixturesand plastic components. Reference to their exhibit at the B.I.F. is made on the previous page. * * * Fairey Aviation Co. (Canada), Ltd., has opened a WesternCanadian works at Pat Bay Airport, Victoria, and has already secured contracts for repair and maintenance of Naval and civilaircraft. The managing director, Mr. C. E. Hibbert, has said that he expects to employ 100 men within a year. The company'smain base is at Halifax, where 1,000 are employed. * * * Recent aircraft standards published by the British StandardsInstitution include B.S.G. 148, Platinum Wire Thermometer Bulbs and Connectors for Aircraft (price 2s); B.S.G. 149, NickelWire Thermometer Bulbs and Connectors for Liquid Tempera- ture Measurement in Aircraft (2s); and B.S.M. 24, GraphicalSymbols for Aircraft Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems (3s 6d).
