HERE AND THERE R.A.F.A.'s Royal Chairman WHEN the Royal Air Forces Associationholds its annual conference at Eastbourne this week-end, H.R.H. the Duke ofEdinburgh will take the chair as the Association's president. He is to arrive atEastbourne by helicopter, landing on the Western Lawns at noon on Saturday. OnSunday morning he will attend a memorial Service and afterwards take the salute ata march-past. Delegates from all parts of the world will attend the conference, atwhich more than 700 R.A.F.A. branches will be represented. The Caravelle Flies PILOTED by Pierre Nadot, the S.E.210Caravelle twin-Avon transport, subject of a very detailed description in Flight ofMay 20th and 27th, was initially flown from Toulouse on May 28th. It is re-ported to have made two circuits of the airport in the course of a trouble-free 22minutes in the air. Dr. Newman Leaves A.W.A. ON Friday last Sir W. G. ArmstrongWhitworth Aircraft, Ltd., announced that Dr. L. W. J. Newman, B.Sc, Ph.D.,A.F.R.Ae.S., is relinquishing his position as chief engineer of their armamentsdivision. He leaves, they add, with the best wishes of the Company and of all hiscolleagues. Getting Down to it TALKED OF for many years past, nowon an official level, a Southern Region spur to London Airport Central is stillmany years from realization. Meanwhile, Sabena Airlines and the Belgian Railwayshave started an underground "autorail" service—half-hourly, non-stop—betweentheir Brussels city terminal and Melsbroek. It was inaugurated on May 16th by KinsBaudouin. Sabena already have an S-55 helicopter link between city and airport. Adaptability AN AUSTRALIAN correspondent tellsof a recent incident in the far north of Queensland which typifies the work of theRoyal Flying Doctor Service. An Auster ambulance aircraft was called to fly 60 miles north from Cairns to a sick man'shome in the remote pioneering settlement of Bailey's Creek. There is nothing re-sembling an air strip at the Creek, so the pilot timed his arrival for low tide andput down on the narrow strip of beach near the settlement; the ambulancebearers had to walk only a few yards to the patient's home. History to Repeat Itself IT is reported from Ottawa that a full-scalereproduction of a Bleriot monoplane is to be used in an attempt to re-enact the chan-nel flight on July 25th, the 46th anniver- sary of the pioneer pilot's achievement.This machine, presumably, is the Bleriot XI built by Mr. S. N. Green, of Calgary,Alberta, mentioned in Flight last year. Classic Motor Cycle Races THE famous T.T. motor cycle races areabout to take place in the Isle of Man— the Clubmen's race tomorrow, June 4th,the Junior T.T. on Monday, the sidecar, 250 c.c. and 125 c.c. events *m Wednes-day, and the Senior T.T. on Friday. Fully illustrated reports of these events willappear in the Motor Cycle Tourist Trophy Number of June 9th (for the first twoevents) and the T.T. Report Number on June 16th. , Friendship Amendments SINCE the description of the Fokker F.27Friendship on pages 762-767 closed for press, the Fokker company have statedthat the static and fatigue tests will now be performed on the second and fourthairframes respectively (and not vice versa, as stated in the article). The companyhave also disclosed details of their revised anti-icing installation: this will featureDelaney Gallay heat-exchangers for thermal anti-icing of the wing leading-edge, and Napier electrical de-icing for the tailplane. As mentioned in the article, thisscheme has been designed to meet the more stringent C.A.A. de-icing require-ments recently proposed. HAMBLE-BOUND: The first flight engine in the new Bristol series, now ready tor delivery to Folland Aircraft for installation in the prototype Gnat.
