519 "Flight" photograph Two pleasant in-flight studies of the prototype Herald in its Queensland Airlines colours. The wide-span Fowler-type flaps extend from the fuselage to the inboard ends of the ailerons. New Ground and Air Views of the Handley Page Herald Prototype adopted primarily to give ease of accessfor loading and maintenance, though good passenger view will also be an importantfeature of the aircraft. All four engines are carried by thecentre-section, which is of sandwich con- struction and is credited with excellentfatigue characteristics. Four bag-type tanks, holding 700 gallons of fuel, areaccommodated within the centre-section, and provision is made for additional tank-age of 300 gallons' capacity if required. With full tanks, the standard version ofthe Herald should have a range of 1,400 miles with 7,000 lb payload; the additionaltankage increases the "full-tanks" range to just over 2,000 miles with nearly 4,700 lbpayload. Range with capacity payload of 10,705 lb is 350 miles. Take-off and landing distances vary, ofcourse, according to loads, temperatures, altitudes and other factors. In general, however, it may be said that the Herald is designed for operation from 1,000 ydgrass strips. Its gross weight is 34,000 lb. Construction of the first Herald beganlast year, and orders for 29 aircraft had been announced before the first flight onAugust 25th, 1955. A second prototype is under construction and airline deliveriesare due to begin late in 1957. The entire Herald project is a private venture byHandley Page; prototype construction was without benefit of Ministry of Supplycontract. It is believed, however, that there is Service as well as civil interest inthe Herald.
