FLIGHT, 21 October 1955 665 SERVICE AVIATION Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm News Three New Standards •THE presentation of three standards, to•*• Nos. 35 and 36 Sqns. and to No. 1 Field Sqn., R.A.F. Regt., is announced bythe Air Ministry. No. 35 Sqn. was formed in 1917 andsaw service on the Western Front where it co-operated with the Cavalry Corps.Hence the squadron badge includes a winged horse's head. In World War 2,No. 35 carried out daylight and night bombing attacks, including raids on theScharnhorst and Tirpitz. It was one of the first four squadrons in PathfinderForce. No. 36 Sqn. was formed in 1916 for home defence duties. It joined CoastalCommand in 1928, and was in Malaya at the time of the Japanese invasion, andfought subsequently in the Far East and the Mediterranean Theatre before rejoin-ing Coastal Command in the South West Approaches in 1944. No. 1 Field Sqn., R.A.F. Regt., wasformed in Egypt in 1921 as No. 1 Armoured Car Company. It fought dur-ing the disturbances in 1922 on the Kurdi- stan frontier. Since that time the squad-ron has been engaged in action in Palestine (1936); in Habbaniya (1941); inthe Western Desert (1941-1943) and in Mosul. In 1945 it returned to Habbaniya. Shackletons on Tour FOUR Shackletons of No. 228 Sqn., St.Eval, are to leave on October 20th for a training and goodwill tour of Brazil,Venezuela and Columbia. They will cross the Atlantic via Gibraltar and Dakar andreturn via Kingston, Jamaica, Bermuda, and the Azores. The aircraft are due backat St. Eval on November 13th. The force commander will be A.V-M.G. W. Tuttle, A.O.C. No. 19 Group, Coastal Command. His deputy will beW/C. R. E. Craven, O.C., Flying, at St. Eval. Each Shackleton—they will all beMk Us—will carry a crew of ten and all ground crew required for maintenance. In the Western Hemisphere air displaysand demonstration flights will be given, and at Caracas the force will be inspectedby the president of Venezuela. At Kings- ton, Jamaica, and Bermuda, the team willcarry out maritime-air exercises with the West Indies Squadron, and at KeyWest similar exercises will take place in conjunction with the U.S. Navy. Hunters to Scandinavia ""THE 16 Hunters of No. 43 Sqn.,•*• Leuchars, are at present on a visit to the Royal Norwegian and Royal SwedishAir Forces. Earlier this week, Air Marshal Sir Dermot Boyle, A.O.C-in-C. FighterCommand, was to fly to Norway to join the squadron at Oslo. He was to beaccompanied by A.V-M. W. G. Cheshire, A.O.C. No. 13 Group, and A.Cdre. P. H.Dunn, air commodore in charge of opera- tions at Fighter Command. It was No. 43 Sqn. which, under thecommand of S/L. R. E. R.A.F. Wins Britannia Shield DY winning the boxing finals at the•" Empire Pool, Wembley, on October 5th, the R.A.F. emerged victorious fromthe tenth Britannia Shield competition. The swimming event had earlier been wonby the R.A.F. with 54 points, their nearest rivals being the U.S.A.F. with 49 points.Norway won the shooting event with 717 points, the R.A.F. score being 703. Thefencing was won by Belgium, with 25 points, whereas the R.A.F. secured onlyllj. Before the boxing events France, the former holder of the Shield, withdrewafter a dispute concerning judging. Light-Welterweight.—Sailor J. Verhagen(Netherlands) beat Pte. G. Gobin (Belgium) on points. Lieht-Middleweight. — A/2C. F. Davis(U.S.) beat L.A/C. J. Cunningham (R.A.F.). Referee stopped fight in first round. Middleweight.—Pte. van. Berkum (Nether-lands) beat L.A/C. L. Mullen (R.A.F.) on points. Lieht-Heavyweieht.—L.A/C. P. Spearman(R.A.F.) beat A/2C. S. S. Banks (U.S.). Referee stopped fight in third round. Heavyweight.—A/2C. J. Hemphill (U.S.)knocked out Pte. T. Nokin (Belgium) in the first round. Final Placings.—R.A.F., 81i points, 1; U.S.,66, 2; Belgium, 61, 3; Netherlands, 56j, 4; Norway, 56, 5. Recommissioning by Air NEXT month a complete new crewtotalling 750 men will be flown from Britain to Singapore to man the cruiserNewcastle. The present crew will be flown home for Christmas. This is thefirst occasion on which a cruiser has been recommissioned in this way. HandleyPage Hermes aircraft will be used.
