"NIPPY WELTERWEIGHT: English Electric Canberra 8.6/ The portfolio itself. "FLIGHT FLY-PAST"—a perfect gift MODERN AIRCRAFT PORTRAYED IN A UNIQUE COLLECTION NOT without professional pride we announce publicationthis week of something quite out of the ordinary—acollection of twenty-four plates depicting current types of British aircraft. Sumptuously presented in portfolio form under the title Flight Fly-Past, it consolidates some of the choicest and most recent work of Flight photographers John Yoxall and L. W. McLaren. The plates are so disposed as to contrast one with another, and range from "straight" views of present-day machines (that of the Canberra, above, is an example) to ethereal vistas, outstanding among which is 'Taery Lands Forlorn," wherein Sea Hawks swim like strange fish above a magical prospect of cloud, land and sea. Exotic, too, is the Boulton Paul P.I 11 A, gulping through its intake close against the camera lens. A GF-100 flashes beneath the photo- graphic machine in startling attitude and proximity, with every detail sharply recorded; and, wheeling in English air above a patchwork of fields is the beauteous Comet 3. Far removed, this, from the formation of Vampires trailing kero- sene fumes across the glaring panorama of Singapore. There are Hunters, too—silhouetted above a cloudscape touched by a lowering sun; the Britannia, proceeding majestically on her lawful occasions; and a Shackleton, sweeping the tinfoil vastness of the Atlantic. "Fire in the Night" describes a scene wherein a Vampire's Goblin stabs the blackness with its fiery exhalation, and under the title "Hard Aport" a formation of Wyvern strike aircraft is a study in symmetry and perspective. The complete list of aircraft depicted is: Avro Shackleton, Avro Vulcan, Avro Aircraft CF-100, Boulton Paul P.111A, Bristol Britannia, de Havilland Comet, de Havilland Vampire (two views), English Electric Canberra, Fairey F.D.2, Folland Gnat, Folland Midge, Gloster Javelin, Gloster Meteor, Hawker Hunter (two views), Hawker Sea Hawk, Hunting Percival Jet Provost, Hunting Percival Provost, Napier Eland- Varsity, Short Seamew, Short Sherpa, Westland Whirlwind and Westland Wyvern. Each plate measures 12in x lOin and the cover is ripple- finished in grey, with silk-screen printing. White antique paper is used for the title page and index and the plates themselves arc printed on specially made Carrongrove an paper. Copies of Flight Fly-Past are obtainable from Iliffe and Sons, Ltd., Dorset House, Stamford Street, London, S.E.1, price 7s 6d (8s 4d including postage). (Above) John Yoxall in a 200 m.p.h. Hart.
