16 FLIGHT, 6 January 1956 COMET IN THE ASCENDANT THE magic of two names—Comet andHawaii—is perfectly distilled in the picture above of the flower-garlanded deHavilland Comet 3 a few minutes after its arrival at the airport of Honolulu. It cap-tures something of the spirit of an historic round-the-world flight which, fast butunflustered, was marked at every port of call by hospitality never before accorded toan airliner. The picture on the right provides areminder that the Comet in its military role will soon be a common sight whereverR.A.F. Transport Command flies. It shows the newly styled Comet 2, the second pro-duction aircraft (formerly G-AMXB, now XK669), which is soon to go to BoscombeDown for acceptance trials before delivery to No. 216 Squadron at Lyneham. Likeits sister aircraft now being completed by de Hayilland at Hatfield and Chester, itembodies the refashioned structure to permit operation at full cabin pressure.Engines are Rolls-Royce Avon 504s of 7,300 lb thrust each, and die aircraft has a fullcivil Certificate of Airworthiness.
