FLIGHT, 4 May 1956 529 AIRCRAFT INTELLIGENCE Boeing B-47B Stratojet. The first air-craft—a B-47B—destined to be a jet- propelled "hurricane hunter" left theBoeing plant at Seattle on March 26th for White Plains, N.Y., for modification as aU.S.A.F. meteorological aircraft. It will make high-altitude checks on tropicalcyclones, while specially fitted B-29s and B-50s continue in their work of low andmedium level observation within the storms. Beech T-34B Mentor. The U.S. Navyhas placed a second order for an unspeci- fied number of T-34B Mentors to a valueof $4m. The type has been in production for the Navy since 1954 and was phasedin as a basic trainer at N.A.S. Pensacola last November. It is gradually replacingthe SNJ (Harvard). of a large number of H-21C helicopters.Deliveries will begin in June and will continue for a year. The agreementfurther stipulates that supplies may be continued subsequently with aircraft manu-factured under licence by S.N.C.A.S.O. S.N.C.A.S.E. 210 Caravelle. Followingthe French participation in the Royal Easter Show in Sydney and a subse-quent world-wide tour by M. The firstflight of this new delta-winged intercepter was made at Istres on April 21st. At themoment is has only die power of a S.N.E.C.M.A. Atar, with variable-areaefflux, but the housing for the rocket motor, which will later make it supersonic,is already to be seen under the after fuse- lage. The windscreen is a knife-edgedstructure, apparently without a central "spine". Main-wheel retraction appearssimilar in layout to that of the Nord Griffon. A long ventral strake extends fromthe lip of the intake back to the level of the wing leading edge, crossing the nosewheel-bay door. The nosewheel appears to be hydraulically steerable, and the wing isvery thin. Taxying trials were carried out at die maker's airfield by Pierre Maulandiand eidier he or Cmdt. Carpentier made the first flight. S.N.C.A.S.O. Helicopters. Mr. Don R.Berlin, president of the Vertol Aircraft Corporation (formerly die Piasecki Heli-copter Corporation) and M.
