620 FLIGHT, 18 May 1956 AIRCRAFT INTELLIGENCE U.S.A. Lockheed F-104A Starfighter. On thispage we reproduce what we believe to be the first accurate three-view drawing of theF-104A to be published. The first of this series of Starfighter had the U.S.A.F.number 55-2955 and was "rolled out" from the Burbank plant (Shop B-l) on December23 last. The next machine, which is the subject of our drawing, was fitted for dis-play purposes with covers which concealed the true form of the intakes. Each intakehas a half-centre-body which produces an inclined shock at supersonic flight speedsand thus increases the pressure recovery of the intake system. A diagram of theport intake was published in Flight last week. The performance of the completeinstallation is described by Lockheed as excellent and, when it is properly matchedto the J79 engine, may well result in a level-flight Mach number of about 2.2. France Fouga Prototypes. Two new prototypesare scheduled to fly this summer; one is the CM. 171 transonic trainer powered bytwo Turbomeca Gabizo turbojets, and the other is the navalized Magister CM.170M. 01. Both machines, which are now virtually complete, are to be transportedto the works at Aire-sur-Adour for installa- tion of equipment. Meanwhile the evalua-tion trials of the first production Magister are now complete and ten productionmachines are either flying or in final assembly at the works at Toulouse-Blagnac.Experimental flying with the six pre-pro- duction CM. 170Rs is continuing at Mont-de-Marsan; 678 flights, 70 at night, were made without incident during March. 5.O.4050 Vautour. The first produc- tion Vautour started its test flights on April 30. The aircraft is based at Lost year it was decided that, where the U.S.A.F. and U.S. Navy both employ a similar basic aircraft type for the same purpose, a common designation shall apply to each machine. Thus the Beech Navy trainer illus- trated is not styled TB-1 but T-34B, the T-34A being the U.S.A.F. Mentor. S.N.CA.S.O.'s airfield at Gron, adjoiningthe factory at St. Nazaire, where the first production batch is now being assembled.Total orders of Vautours for the French Air Force at present stand at 360. Czechoslovakia On April 22 a new two-seat sportingaircraft designated Z.226 (probably of Zlin origin) flew for the first time. Constructionis of metal and basic data are: maximum weight 1,276 lb and maximum speed 144m.p.h. on a 160 h.p. engine. The proto- type was made by the Moravian NationalEnterprises at Gottwaldov Otrokovice. Japan Tachihi R-52. This aircraft was the firstfull-sized powered machine to be built in Japan since 1945. Originally the R-52 waspowered by a Japanese radial engine of 130 h.p. and it was illustrated, in this form,on this page in our issue of December 5, 1952. It has now been re-engined with anAmerican flat-four unit which is described as a "Continental O-290BD"; there isactually no such designation, and the engine probably fitted is the Lycoming O-290-D2B, of 140 h.p. Painted red and yellow, the revised R-52 is used as a trainer forpilots of the Yomiuri Newspaper Company; the aircraft can cruise for 4J hr at 85m.p.h. with a weight of 1,920 lb.
