1956 - 0673.PDF
1 June 1956 - A preliminary cut-away illustration of the Vickers-Armstrongs Vanguard, prepared by the manufacturer. Points to note are the generous cargo space in the belly and the built-in folding stairs. 673 facilities, accommodation for 110 tourist passengers is available. Seat-attachments are marked to indicate the position of seatsfor the various layouts, and allowance is made for the insertion of a movable bulkhead in the centre cabin to permit mixed-classaccommodation. Indeed, the presence of both an entrance and a galley forward and aft lends itself admirably to the provisionof mixed accommodation. Built-in air-stairs are fitted in at each entrance as standard. Lavatory accommodation amidshipsis situated in line with the airscrew discs. The bottom hold of the Vanguard's double-bubble fuselageis devoted to two capacious freight compartments, 750 cu ft forward and 630 cu ft aft. The Vanguard's freight accommoda-tion, as previously discussed, is an exceptional feature of the air- craft, permitting a high payload to be carried when only a fewpassenger seats are filled. The doors are large—5ft 6in wide, and, as shown in the picture, the holds are deep enough (4ft 3in) toenable a man to work inside with ease. The floors are stressed to 150 lb/sq ft. Flight Deck. Entry to the Vanguard's flight deck is gainedvia the forward entry door. The layout conforms to S.A.E. (Left) Fuel system of the Vanguard. Details are as follows:— (1) fuel pump, (2) anti-surge valve, (3) filler cap, (4) float-operated vent valve, (5) engine master cock, (6) engine cross-feed cock, (7) aircraft cross- feed cock, (8) twin non-return valve, (9) refuelling/defuetiiitg valve, (10) refuclling/defuelling connection, (11) tlowmeter transmitter, (12) fuel heater, (13) fuel filter, (14) engine-driven fuel pump, (15) emergency pressure-relief valve, (T6) sump and water drain, (17) low-pressure warntnq switch, (18) Pacitor tank unit, (19) backing pump, (20) cross-feed to starboard system. (Below) The flight deck of the Vanguard has seating for a crew of three, although the aircraft can be operated by a captain and a co-pilot- engineer. A fourth seat is provided tor a supernumerary.
