8 June 1956 755 Hawker Hunter Two-Seater. TRAINERS Hunting Percival Jet Prorost. Hunting Percival Provost T.I adapted for armament train- ing and offensive operations. de Havilland Vampire Trainer (VampireT.ll). ""THREE trends are particularly apparent in the development -"- of modern trainers and training systems: the increasingly wide acknowledgment—if not immediate acceptance—of jet-pro- pelled trainers for ab initio instruction; the now-general adapta- tion of standard combat aircraft—including the very newest supersonic fighters—for "combat proficiency" training (and, as we have seen, for tactical employment also); and the recognition —in an order for a new Northrop machine for the U.S.A.F.—of a specialized type for supersonic instruction. We have already alluded to the jet transport/trainer now under review in the U.S.A. GREAT BRITAIN de Havilland Vampire Trainer The Vampire Trainer is the mostwidely used machine of its type in the world and is outstanding for its versatility and ease of handling. All R.A.F. pilots now earn their wingson the type and usually go solo after about 6i hours, having received ab initio instruction on the Hunting Percival Provost or Jet Provost.Instructor and pupil sit side by side in a pressurized cockpit with clear- view canopy. Ejection seats are fitted, and provision is made for instruc-tion and practice in fighter navigation, combat, bombing, gunnery and rocket firing. With two 20 mm guns and full internal fuel it is possibleto carry several combinations of rockets, bombs and external tanks. For rocket instruction eight 25 lb or 60 lb projectiles can be carried inaddition to two 100-gal external tanks. Without the latter it is possible to carry practice bombs or two 500 lb bombs in addition to rocket pro-jectiles. Two 1,000 lb bombs can be carried in place of the tanks, but not normally with, rockets fitted. Should the machine be required foroperational service it can be operated as a single-seater with the full fighter complement of four 20 mm guns. A cine camera in the noseoperates for both rocket and gun firing, and can be used during dive- bombing attacks. Span, 38ft; length, 34ft 6in; gross weight, 11,680 1b; max. speed,538 m.p.h. Hawker Hunter Two-Seater This new version of the Hunter isintended not only as a trainer but "to open up opportunities for even wider tactical roles." Aft of the intakes it is identical with the Mk 4,but forward of this point the nose is entirely new. The cockpit has two gun-sights and two Martin-Baker lightweight ejector seats. The canopyis a fine piece of plastic moulding. Two 30 mm Aden guns are fitted in streamlined housings under the cockpit. Hunting Percival Jet Provost T.2 Compared with its predecessor thismark of the Jet Provost has a more powerful Armstrong Siddeley Viper turbojet and a completely revised and much shortened undercarriage.Improvements have also been made to the cockpit. Performance has been improved by these modifications and take-off and landing runs areconsiderably shorter. Rate of climb is increased by 35Oft/min at sea level.A number of Jet Provosts are now undergoing service trials with the R.A.F. The following is an extract from Flight's very detailed account
