FLIGHT, 19 October 1956 643 AIRCRAFT INTELLIGENCE Great Britain Short S.B.5. Although little has beenheard of this unique research aircraft for many months it is still in being,, and finaltrials, with the full (69 deg) wing sweep configuration, should soon be under way.The possibility of fitting an auxiliary turbojet beneath the fuselage is being con-sidered. It will be recalled that the S.B.5 was built to determine the low-speedcharacteristics of the English Electric P.I. Meteor Markings. One of the photo-graphs above shows Meteor F.8 VZ494 of the A.P.S. (Armament Practice School) atAcklington. The markings are yellow and black and are included on the wing-tips.Aircraft of the School often accompany squadrons of the Royal Auxiliary Air Forceto their training camp in Malta. Canada Temco TT-l. A series of technical andflight-evaluation tests of the Temco TT-l primary jet trainer was recently completedby a team of R.C.A.F. officers. The Canadians were at Temco's Dallas, Texas, plant for five days, and are reported to have been "attempting to determine thefeasibility of commencing a student's flight instruction in jet-powered aircraft."The TT-1 has already been selected for use as the U.S. Navy's first primary jet. U.S.A. Douglas STOLjVTOL. It is reported byAviation Week that the U.S. Army is very interested in a Douglas STOL/VTOLdesign, described as an outgrowth of studies which started years ago for a DC-3replacement. Douglas have remained interested in such an aircraft after studying, and having abandoned, helicopters. "The project is not yet finned up as a militarycommitment, and may very soon become a commercial venture in another version,"reports our contemporary. Douglas B-66 Destroyer. The name Des- troyer has been conferred upon the B-66 bomber, U.S.A.F. counterpart of the A3D Skywarrior. France Briguet 1050 Alizi. The name Alize(Tradewind) has been conferred upon the Breguet 1050 anti-submarine aircraft forFrance's A£ronautique Navale. The first pre-production Aliz£ was recently trans-ported to the Toulouse-Montaudran air- field, where it will be assembled for flighttesting at Toulouse-Blagnac. The engine is a Rolls-Royce Dart, and the Society ofBritish Aircraft Constructors announces that the Alize promises to provide a steadymarket for this unit—the most widely used turboprop in the world. Subject of a news paragraph on this page is the Fiat G.91, seen on take-off. The curiously marked Meteor is referred to in an item— "Meteor Markings"—in column one. Italy Fiat G.91. Since its successful first flightat Turin/Caselle on August 9, the Fiat G.91 light fighter has made good progress.Early flights have indicated a particularly good performance and a short take-off runwhich will render it particularly suitable for tactical operations from small grassfields. The Bristol Orpheus engine has behaved excellently and the higher thrustof later marks will further improve per- formance. The first flight was made byFiat test pilot Capt. Riccardo Bignamini and lasted for 30 minutes. The G.91 wasthe winning design in the NATO light tactical fighter design competition heldtwo years ago. In outline, though not in size, it closely resembles the NorthAmerican F-86K. Spain Light Fighters. Respectively projected byHispano Aviacion S.A. and Construcciones Aeronauticas S.A. are light fighters desig-nated XC-6 and XC-7. The former machine is a delta, designed by ProfessorWilli Messerschmitt and bearing the works designation HA-300. The XC-7 is also adelta and is alternatively known as the XH-101. Japan Air Strength. At the end of AugustJapanese military air strength totalled 687 aircraft, made up as follows: L-5, 33;L-19, 103; L-21, 56; KAL-1, 1; H-13, 14; H-19, 5; P2V-7, 6; PV-2, 16; TBM-3W,10; TBM-3S, 10; PBY-6A, 2; JRF-5, 4; KAL-2, 2; T-34, 113; SNJ, 11; S-51, 3;S-55, 3; F-86F, 63; C-46, 30; T-33A, 72; T-6G, 128; Vampire Trainer, 1; T-28B, 1.Civil aircraft totalled 135, specifically: Cessna 170B, 19; Cessna 180, 3; Cessna195, 6; Piper Super Cub, 7; Piper Pacer, 4; Piper Tri-Pacer, 4; Aeronca Super Chief,1; Fletcher FD-25, 2; Ryan Nayion, 1; Beechcraft Bonanza, 4; D.H.
