909 Parca. SAM with liquid-propellant sustainer and four wrap-round, solid-propellant boost motors. Length overall (as shown), about 16ft 6in; span, 5ft 3in; body diameter, 21 in; weight complete,2,200 Ib; burn-out speed, M = 1.7; ceiling, 65,000ft. it is a two-stage SAM, with a solid-propellant booster and an internalsustainer rocket. Design Mach number is 2. The unusual factor is that it has a span of no less than lift lin, and weighs 2,200 lb. AIR-TO-SURFACE Ouest Aviation. At the end of September the company announcedthat they had "been carrying out for several years, under our own initiative . . . the preparation of a long-range ground-to-air missilewhich will be the ultimate development of the Trident (a piloted fighter). The first derived version of this aircraft, entirely guided, will shortlybe put into flight." Nord 5200. Originally designated S.F.E.C.M.A.S. SS.10, this crudebut effective weapon was first revealed in May 1953. Derived largely from German work, it has command guidance transmitted through thinwires unwound from bobbins carried in the missile. It is designed for use against armour, and has a 6.7 lb shaped charge in the warhead.It can be launched from aircraft or by a foot-soldier, and in the latter case the ingenious storage container also forms the launcher. Thetwin-wire control cannot be jammed and 80 per cent accuracy is claimed at one mile range, the missile spinning slowly for stability. Ithas been launched from the Flamant, Storch, Alouette and Djinn, and in 1950 was evaluated by the U.S. Army. Nord 5210. Developed from the 5200, this anti-A.F.V. weaponhas improved guidance and greater range. It is in production and will shortly become the first French operational missile. Sud-Est 1522. In active design status since 1955, this weapon iscompletely "under wraps" at present. It is stated that a probable offshoot will be an AAM. Matra M.04. SAM two-thirds-scale model, with liquid-propellant motor rated at 2,730 Ib for 14 sec. Length, 15ft 1in; span, 5ft 10in; body diameter, 16in; weight, from 770 to 1,012 Ib. usually nearer the latter; burn-out speed, 1,100 m.p.h. Nord 5103. AAM with two-stage solid-propellant motor. Overall length, 8ft 2£in; span, 3ft 2in; body diameter, 11 in; weight, 287 Ib; burn-out speed, M = 1; range, 4 to 7 miles. Veronique. Developed at the Vernon Laboratory since 1949, thisballistic weapon was originally employed in general research. A unique feature is that it is tethered to the launcher by four wires, each attachedto cross-fins; as the missile ascends, the wires unwind uniformly from a profiled drum (protected from the rocket blast by a deflector) to holdthe flight truly vertical, the fins finally being blown off by clockwork- triggered charges. Looking like any other such missile, Veronique is 19.68ft long,21.6in in diameter and is propelled by an RFNA/petrol motor giving 8,800 lb for 35 sec. With a launching weight of 2,205 lb speed is 3,100m.p.h. at a burn-out at 40 miles. In 1953 Diomede Catroux, then Secretary for Air, said that the weapon could carry "a military load"for 150 miles, and that a longer-range SSM was being evolved from it. CANADA SURFACE-TO-SURFACE DEFA/ENTAC. Developed by the government armament estab-lishment for use by forward troops against armour, this missile is more refined than the Nord 5210. It nevertheless retains cable guidance;propulsion is by a smokeless, solid-propellant rocket, and the maximum operational range is 2 km (about lj miles). Ouest-Aviation. Two months ago this large aircraft company stated that they were engaged in the development of "various types of strategic missile with a completely new navigation system." Sud-Est 4200. Owing to its easy design parameters and general"1945-type" outlook this subsonic SSM is almost ready for service, should it be adopted. It has an aircraft-type configuration, with nohorizontal tail and vertical fins on the wing tips. Zero-length launching is effected with two or four solid boost motors (two below and some-times two more above) and cruise propulsion is provided by an integral ramjet. Range can be extended by a droppable tank, as shown in thedrawing. Guidance is by radar command. AIR-TO-AIR Velvet Glove. In April 1952 Dr. O. M. Solandt, chairman of theDefense Research Board, announced that an air-to-air missile was being developed by the Canadian Armament Research and DevelopmentEstablishment, at Valcartier, P.Q. In August of the following year it was stated to have reached the flight-test stage; an F-86 Sabre wasbeing used, although the missile was intended for use on the CF-100 all-weather fighter. In appearance this Canadian weapon is utterly simple and straight-forward. Although several varieties have been made, most are as depicted in the drawing below. It is very large for an AAM of suchearly conception, and the size of wings and controls may indicate that good altitude performance was a requirement. The body is madefrom wrapped sheet. A curious feature is the small recess cut fom each wing root. Development was reasonably happy, but early this year the pro-gramme was cancelled owing to insufficient range, according to an American report. Velvet Glove, as the weapon was known, was largelyengineered, to C.A.R.D.E. requirements, by Canadair. In 1955 the Sud-Est 4100. SAM with solid-propellant sustainer and solid-propellant boost notar. Overall length, with boost motor, about 9ft; span, about 3ft 2in; body iiameter, 12in; weight, with boost motor, 287 Ib; burn-out speed, about M = 1.2.diai Velvet Glove. AAM with internal sustainer rocket, probably burning solid pro- pellant. Overall length, at least 10ft; span about 3ft 6m; weight, at least 500 Ib. c Nord 5200. SSM with solid-propellant motor. Length, about 3ft; span, about 2ft 6in; body diameter, 7in; weight, 31-35 Ib; burn-out speed, rather more than 200 m.p.h.; maximum range, 2 miles. Sud-Est 4200. SSM with two (rarely four) solid-propellant boost motors and single integral ramjet. Length, 6ft 2in; span, about 9ft 6in; body external diameter, 1ft 5in; weight, about 300 Ib; cruise speed, M = 0.9; range, up to 62 miles.
