F. H. Hemsley, Mr. David James, Mr. A. N. Clifton, Mr. E. W. J. Gray. Vickers-Arm strongs ReorganizationT HE reorganizational changes at Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft),Ltd. (referred to in a "From all Quarters" item in this issue), will not become fully effective until April 1, the date on whichBrigadier Clemow, named as chief engineer (guided weapons), is due to join the company from the Ministry of Supply, where hehas been Director of Guided Weapon Projects since June 1955. From 1951-53 he was Assistant Director of Guided WeaponDevelopment, then from 1953-55 was loaned to the Fairey Avia- tion Co., Ltd., where, as Head of Guided Weapon Development,he led the team which produced the Fireflash. Until Brig. Clemow joins Vickers Mr. H. H. Gardner, the newchief engineer (military aircraft) will also act as chief engineer (guided weapons). Mr. Gardner has been a special director ofVickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft), Ltd., since 1954. He joined Vickers Aviation, Ltd., in 1929, became chief technician atWeybridge in 1941, assistant chief designer (aircraft) in 1945 and chief designer (guided weapons) in 1953. Mr. Basil Stephenson, F.R.Ae.S., the new chief engineer (civilaircraft), was appointed a special director of Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft), Ltd., in 1954. The previous year he had succeededMr. G. R. Edwards as chief designer (aircraft), and in this capa- city has been in charge of the design organization responsiblefor the Vanguard. He had previously, as assistant chief designer, played an important part in the design of the Viking, Viscountand Valiant. Other appointments at Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft), Ltd.,resulting from the reorganization are: Mr. G. F. H. Hemsley, A.F.R.Ae.S., formerly deputy chief designer (aircraft) at Wey-bridge becomes assistant chief engineer (aircraft); Mr. David James, B.Sc, F.R.Ae.S., formerly chief structural engineer,becomes chief designer aircraft (Weybridge); Mr. A. N. Clifton, M.B.E., B.Sc., F.R.Ae.S., formerly assistant chief designer (Super-marine) becomes chief designer aircraft (SupermariBe); and Mr. E. W. J. Gray, B.Sc., M.I.Mech.E., F.R.Ae.S., becomes chiefdesigner aircraft (Hum). Mr. Hemsley was chief aerodynamicist (1951-53) and assistantchief designer (1955-57) before becoming deputy chief designer. Mr. James was chief stressman before he became chief structuralengineer. Mr. A. N. Clifton became chief of Supermarine's Technical Office in 1930 and assistant chief designer in 1948.Mr. Gray was formerly chief designer, Handley Page (Reading), Ltd., and in this appointment was in charge of the design ofthe Herald. English Electric Presentation /"\N January 4 the first awards to engineering apprentices train-^-' ing with the English Electric Co., Ltd., at Warton Aerodrome, Lanes, were presented by Lord Caldecote, a director of the com-pany. The J. R. Harwood Shield was handed to Neil Wolsten- holme (21), judged the best all-round apprentice who begantraining in 1953, and to Harry Malley (20), judged the best who began in 1954. In his speech [to which reference was made in Flight forlast week] Lord Caldecote said that the company was continuing to receive inquiries for modifications to the Canberra and thatthere were clear indications, "even at this early stage," that there would be many developments to the P.I which would "keep thecompany busy for a long time." Mr. N. H. Payne. S/L. Duke's New Post SPECULATION about the future of S/L. Neville Duke, D.S.O.,*"* O.B.E., D.F.C., A.F.C., since his resignation as chief test pilot of Hawker Aircraft, Ltd., came to an end on January 15 when itwas announced that he had joined the Board of the group of engineering companies owned by Mr. Brian D. Songhurst. Theseare: Serco, Ltd., Serco (Ulster), Ltd.; A. Boucher (Metals), Ltd.; and Engineers Supply (London), Ltd. Their head office is at 387City Road, London, E.C.I, and they are engaged in supplying the aircraft and many other industries with a wide range of tools,equipment and materials. New Dowty Director ""PHE appointment of Mr. N. H. Payne-*• to the Board of Dowty Fuel Systems, Ltd., has been announced. He becamechief engineer to the company in May last year, having previously held a simi-lar appointment with Normalair, Ltd., since 1952. Mr. Payne served his appren-ticeship with Armstrong Siddeley Motors, Ltd., and returned to that company aftertaking an honours degree at Birmingham University in 1933. At the outbreak ofwar he joined Rotol, Ltd., and from 1944 until going to Normalair he was with thede Havilland Engine Co., Ltd. It is also announced from Cheltenhamthat Sir Godfrey Ince, G.C.B., K.B.E., was appointed to the Board of the Dowty Group, Ltd., on January14. He has had a distinguished Civil Service and political career; and from 1944 until January last year he was Permanent Secretaryto the Ministry of Labour and National Service. Saunders-Roe Appointment IT has been announced that Mr. T. L.Ciastula, Dipl.Ing., A.M.I.Mech.E., A.F.R.Ae.S., has been appointed ChiefDesigner of the Helicopter Division of Saunders-Roe, Ltd., having formerly beenChief Technician (Helicopter Division). Mr. Ciastula, who was born in Polandand graduated in mechanical and aero- nautical engineering at the technical uni-versity in Warsaw—his Dipl.Ing. degree is equivalent to M.Sc.(Eng.)—-came toEngland from France in 1940 as an officer of the Polish Air Force. After operationalservice as a fighter pilot he was posted in 1943 to the R.A.E., Farnborough. Hejoined Saunders-Rqe, Ltd., in 1948 as a senior aerodynamicist; in November 1952 he transferred to thecompany's helicopter division as chief project engineer and three months later was appointed its chief technician. Renting Aviation Posts RECENT news from the Canadian aircraft industry is thatMr. A. F. Soutar, manager of Renting Aviation, Ltd., of Oshawa and Toronto, has been appointed to the Board of Direc-tors of the company. The first pilot to be employed by the Photo- graphic Survey Company, Ltd., after its formation in 1946, Mr.Soutar has since been engaged on a large number of varied flying operations for the Canadian Hunting companies and has loggedover 3,000 hr on helicopters alone. Another Renting Aviation appointment recently announcedis that of Mr. J. N. H. Greenshields as chief check pilot. Mr. Greenshields, who joined Renting in 1950, was previously withB.E.A. and with Pest Control, Ltd. Mr. T. L Ciastula.
