(West-Norway Airlines) was founded, mainly by Bergen shipping interests, as a private com-pany in 1947. Considerable charter work and ambulance flying is done, and since 1951 V.L.S.has operated scheduled flying-boat services over two routes, Bergen-Alesund-Molde-Kristian-sund-Tiondheim in summer and Bergen- Haugesund-Stavanger throughout the year. In June 1956 V.L.S. opened a landplaneroute Stavanger-Bergen-Trondheim and this route is flown throughout the year. Tne company operates over more than4,500 miles of domestic routes, and has no less than 60 flights a week in each directionbetween Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. West African Airways Corporation, an asso-ciate of B.O.A.C., was founded in 1946 by the West African territories of Nigeria, GoldCoast (now Ghana), Sierra Leone and the Gambia. Most of the company's network isin Nigeria but services extend as far west as Dakar and the unduplicated route mileage isabout 7,000. West Coast Airlines, Inc., was founded in1941 under the laws of the State of Washing- ton for the operation of passenger, mail andexpress services in the Pacific Coast area, but the C.A.B. held the application over until afterthe war and only granted certificates in 1946. West Coast Airways, is a new operator fly-ing scheduled services between Hokitika and Franz Josef Glacier, Fox Glacier, Haast andMilford Sound. Western Airlines, Inc, claims to be theUnited States' oldest airline, having been founded in 1925 as Western Air Express. OnApril 17, 1926, air mail services were begun between Los Angeles and Las Vegas and SaltLake City and on May 23 that year the first passengers were carried over the route. WesternAir Express was part of the original TWA when it was formed in 1930 but Westernregained its independence in 1934. The pre- sent name was legally adopted on March 11,1941. Wideroe's Flyveselskap og Polarfly A/S. isan old-established company engaging in many forms of air activity including charter flying and air survey. Wideroe's operated variouspioneer air services around the Norwegian coast before the war, and for several years since thewar the company has been operating the north Norway services for S.A.S. Routes, flown insummer, are Bodo - Troms5, Bodo - Narvik, Tromsd - Andsvann and Tromso - Vadso.Head Office: Oslo, Norway. Executive: V. Wien Alaska Airlines, Inc., operates an ex-tensive network of passenger, freight and mail services throughout most of Alaska. Operationsare concentrated in the Fairbanks area with longer routes stretching to Nome in the westand Point Barrow on the north coast. The company has operated under its present titlesince 1936. Previously it had operated since 1929 as Northern Air Transport; its originaloperations began in 1924. Head Office: Fairbanks, Alaska.Executives: S. Wien, president; G. B. Woods Airways Pty., Ltd., was founded in1947 and began scheduled operations in July 1948. The company's only route is that be-tween Perth and Rottnest Island—a distance of 26 miles.
