This wasannounced in Hong Kong last week by Air Marshal the Earl of Bandon, who recentlytook over command of the Far East Air Force from Air Marshal Sir FrancisFressanges. The new C-in-C. said that R.A.F. units in Singapore and Malayawere first-class and had very much im- pressed him by their efficiency. He addedthat Britain's defence cuts would not affect R.A.F. units in the Far East, and thegeneral position for that area would remain the same. University Nomination CJINCE 1947 one of the Deputy Under-^ Secretaries of State at Air Ministry, Sir Folliott H. Sandford, has been nominatedRegistrar of Oxford University and if the appointment is approved will take over hisduties next spring. Sir Folliott was from 1937 to 1940 privatesecretary to successive Air Ministers, then until 1941 financial adviser to R.A.F. FerryCommand at Montreal. After a period in West Africa he returned to Air Ministry in1944 as an assistant under-secretary. He was appointed K.B.E. in 1949. R.A.F. IN BRIEF In Parliament last week the Air Ministerstated that the Class E Reserve of the R.A.F. would be reduced by approximately45,000 reservists who are surplus to mobilization requirements. Those con-cerned would be given at least three months' notice. ***** Recruitment for the R.A.F. during thesecond quarter of this year was 2,734 less than during the first quarter, figures pub-lished by the Ministry of Defence showed last week. The only category whichshowed an increase is that for apprentices and boy entrants. ***** The R.A.F., who at the close needed13 runs for victory with two wickets to fall, drew their cricket match with the RoyalNavy at Portsmouth last week. ***** Nearly 500 A.T.C. cadets are to give ademonstration of training at R.A.F. White Waltham, near Maidenhead, Berks, to-morrow (August 10), commencing at 2.45 p.m. Sixty overseas cadets, ending a three-week visit to this country will also take part. ***** A Battle of Britain thanksgiving serviceis to be held in Westminster Abbey on Sunday, September 15, at 3 p.m. Applica-tions for tickets should be made in writing to the Under-Secretary of State, Air Minis-try (S.4c), Whitehall Gardens, London, S.W.I, not later than August 31.
