FLIGHT, 18 October 1957 605 I_N both military and technical senses the Arrow is a veryremarkable achievement. It promises an exceedingly high per- formance combined with long range and capacity for anunprecedented load of electronic equipment and armament. The power units of the Mk 1 version are two Pratt and Whitney J75turbojets with reheat, but the second mark of Arrow will have Orenda Iroquois, likewise, of course, with reheat. The span ofthe delta wing is 50ft; overall length is 77ft 9|in and height 21ft 3in. The first Arrow was completed in under thirty monthsfrom the first design release, and the man-hours-per-pound required for its production are claimed to have been about 80per cent of those necessary for projects of similar size and com- plexity throughout the aviation industry in North America. Themakers add: "It is now four years since the design started. This is considered better than average for the time required to designand build present-day high-performance aircraft." The present Arrow is said to be "on the threshold of the heat barrier" andstudies are in hand to adapt the aircraft for "even higher speeds to pierce this barrier." A fighter of such all-round capability coulddoubtless be developed to serve as a potent strike aircraft.
