As yet unnamed, the A2F-1 is now in the engineering-design stage at Bethpage, and the prototype should fly in about one year's time. Intended for tactical naval attack operations, the A2F will be powered by an 8,000-lb-thrust Pratt and Whitney J52, will have a crew of two and will be capable of operation from all U.S. Navy carriers. North American FJ-4. Limited produc-tion is continuing at Columbus on the FJ-4B Fury multi-purpose attack aircraftfor the U.S. Navy (photograph above). What will probably be the final version isthe FJ-4F, for which North American Aviation's Rocketdyne Division have deve-loped a single-barrel H.T.P./JP-4 rocket motor for combat boost. This is the firstmixed-power aircraft to go into production in the Western world. North American A3J-1. One of the mostimportant new aircraft under development in the U.S.A., the A3J is to be the standardlong-range piloted megaton-delivery system of the U.S. Navy. Capable ofoperation only from the Forrestal-c\a.ss carriers, the aircraft will have side-by-sideseats for a crew of two and will be powered by a pair of afterburning G.E. J79 enginesmounted at the rear. Maximum speed will be Mach 2. A land-based version, dubbedthe "Retaliator," is belag evaluated by the U.S.A.F. Kaman H-43. The standard "fire crashrescue" helicopter of the U.S. Air Force, a definitive contract for about f 10m is beingnegotiated for an initial batch of 130; two will be assigned to each S.A.C. base. Thefirst version, the H-43A, will have a single Pratt and Whitney R-1340 Wasp engine,but the H-43B will have a Lycoming T53 turboshaft engine. France Briguet 940. The maiden flight of this exceedingly interesting STOL aircraft is scheduled for a date in April. The proto- type will be a flying test-bed with four synchronized Turbom^ca Turmo turbo- props. A French report states that the operational version, the Breguet 941, is "presently under intensive study." The report continues: "The United States . . . with whom a co-operation agreement has recently been signed, through the agency of Piasecki Aircraft, has shown interest." Briguet Deux Poms. Details of the flightto America of the Breguet Deux Fonts four- engined transport have been given. Thetour, which was organized at very short notice, occupied 108 hours 48 minutes offlight and more than 18 hours of demonstra- tion over a period of 35 days.
