412 FLIGHT, 28 March 1958 HERE AND THERE Swiss Fighter Vote ON March 19 the Council of States, upperhouse of the Swiss Federal Parliament, approved a total credit of 441m francs(£36,750,000 sterling) for 100 Swiss-built P.16s to be powered by Armstrong SiddekySapphires which are to be built under licence in Switzerland. The amount votedfor the engines totalled 34m francs (£2,800,000). Indonesian Operations AMONG aircraft used by the IndonesianAir Force during recent operations in Sumatra have been P-51 Mustangs andB-25 Mitchells taken over from the Dutch several years ago. The Air Force hasrecently received eight Grumman Albatross amphibians and is to get an unspecifiednumber of Fairchild C-123 Providers. German F.A.A. Sqns. EARLY in May the first two squadronsof the German naval air arm whose personnel have been trained in this countryare due to form at Eglinton (Gannets) and Lossiemouth (Sea Hawks). They will workup at those stations under R.N. supervision and leave later this year for Germany. SeaHawk pilots are now being trained at R.N.A.S. Lossiemouth and Gannet pilots by the Fairey Aviation Co. assisted byR.N. instructors. Observers and telegraph- ists are undergoing the regular Britishcourse at Culdrose and maintenance ratings are being instructed at various R.N. estab-lishments and manufacturers' works. M. Roger Druine WE record with regret the death, onMarch 19, of M. Roger Druine, the French light-aircraft designer. His successfuldesigns include the Turbulent single-seater and Turbi and Condor two-seaters, all ofwhich are approved by the Popular Flying Association for amateur construction in thiscountry. M. Druine, who was only 37 years of age, built his first aircraft whenonly 16. He was an active pilot and flying instructor as well as a designer. Inside Job APPRENTICES of the Bristol AeroplaneCo., Ltd., made all the metalwork (with the exception of the fan) for a new low-speedwind tunnel to be used at the company's Apprentices School. Since no carpentry isdone at the school, manufacture of the wooden sections of the tunnel (which is 18ftlong and of composite wood and metal construction) was entrusted to John Per-kins and Son, Ltd.; but the total cost of Span, 36ft; length, 23ft 7in; height, 6ft 2in. WORKMASTER: General arrangement of Auster's latest product, the agricul- tural and general- utility aircraft on which we published notes last week (p. 359). The engine is a Ly coming O-360-A of ISO h.p. SEEN AT BRUSSELS: One of C.S.A.'s three Tu-104s, which are due to inaugurate a service from Prague next Tuesday (April I). The aircraft also visited London last week. the project, in which Bristol University has!collaborated, is expected to be only about £1,000—compared with £2,500 or £3,000if the equipment had been bought outside. Lofty Theme DISTINGUISHED American womanpilot Ruth Nichols, who is a lieutenant- colonel in the U.S. Civil Air Patrol, andwho last January, in company with the commander of Suffolk Air Force Base,flew to a higher announced altitude than any other woman in the world (51,000ft),has recently published a book entitled Wings for Life. H.P. Test Pilot PHILIP MURPHY has joined the staffof Handley Page, Ltd., as an experimental test pilot. He qualified as an R.A.F. pilotin July 1947, and between 1948 and 1951 served with Nos. 56 and 66 fightersquadrons. During this period he led an aerobatic team and, in Meteors, took partin many flying demonstrations, including Mr. Murphy. the Festival of Britain Air Display atHatfield in June 1951. Mr. Murphy resigned his commission in August 1951in order to join Vickers-Armstrongs as an experimental test pilot and subsequentlyworked on the proving of missile systems on Washington, Canberra and Meteoraircraft. Later he was concerned with Valiant and Viscount development flying. Milan Shop-window EXHIBITS on the Bristol Aeroplane Com-pany's stand at the Milan International Samples Fair (which opens on April 12)are to include an Orpheus BOr.3 turbojet installed in the Fiat G.91; and scale modelsof the Britannia (in Northeast Airlines' livery), Bloodhound and the Type 192helicopter. Oil-bore Airlift HELICOPTER transport for technicians,surveyors and equipment at the site of oil explorations at Giandari in West Pakistanis to be provided by a Westland Whirlwind of Fison-Airwork, Ltd., operating undercontract to the Pakistan Shell Oil Co., Ltd. The aircraft, which is on its way out toPakistan, will be based some 350 miles north of Karachi.
