Additional capital was called up in1955 and B.E.A. sold one-third of its invest- ment to B.O.A.C. In autumn 1957 Alitaliawas merged with L.A.I, (see separate entry), its capital being increased from L.4,500 millionto L.10,000 million. Allegheny Airlines, Inc., was founded in1937 as All-American Airways. That company pioneered "pick up" air mail services usingStirson Reliants with collection attachments. These services were worked under contractwith the post office and from 1940 under C.A.B. certification. By 1946 nearly 6,000 miles a daywere being flown at 94 per cent regularity. The system extended from Philadelphia in the eastto Cincinnati in the west and Charleston in the south to Jamestown, N.Y., in the north. Therewere four flights a day. The service was with- drawn in 1949 after nearly 15 million miles hadbeen flown. All-American began normal scheduled passenger services in 1949, andbecame Allegheny Airlines in 1953. Perman- ently certificated routes now extend fromDetroit and Buffalo through Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Ohio, Delawareand West Virginia. American Airlines, Inc., which carries morepassenger traffic than any other airline, was founded in 1934 as successor to American Air-ways which had come into existence in 1930 to integrate the operations of more than adozen operators. The present-day organiza- tion is a vast undertaking and in 1957 its fleetof 206 aircraft flew five million passenger miles and 114 million freight and mail ton miles.The airline has over 60 aircraft on order at the present time. Its route system stretches fromcoast to coast, into Canada and south to Mexico, while throughplane agreementsstretch the network southeast from Dallas to Miami. Ansett—A.N.A. was founded as Ansett Air-ways Pty., Ltd., by R. M. Ansett in 1936 and the airline's first service was opened that yearbetween Melbourne and Hamilton, the route over which Ansett had previously operated roadservices. In 1952 Ansett took over the flying- boat operator Barrier Reef Airways and in 1953acquired some of the routes of another flying- boat operator Trans Oceanic Airways. In 1957Ansett acquired A.N.A. to become Australia's largest privately-owned airline. The mergerbetween these two airlines is still in process. In addition to extensive land-plane services,sea-plane services are still operated by San- dringhams between Sydney and Hobart, fromSydney to Lord Howe Island; and (in summer) from both Sydney and Brisbane to HaymanIsland. Arab Airways (Jerusalem), Ltd., successor toArab Airways Association, was founded in 1953, and B.O.A.C. has a minority interest.Services are operated within Jordan and to Iraq, the Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait,Aden and Syria. Atpresent the only scheduled operations are from Haifa to Tel Aviv/Yafo and from Haifa and Piper Cubs being loaded into an Aerovias Sud Americana Commando.
