It has mastered a trickly problem of survival in an area virtually devoidof water and can now do without the stuff—indefinitely! A common rat forced to live under such conditionswould die in a few days. The secret lies in the Kangaroo- rat's ability to make use of metabolic water, formed bythe oxidation of parts of its food.
