29 MAY 1959 FLIGHT NATURAL SURVIVAL <R**> SERIES 2 Dipodomys merriami NEVER TOUCHES A DROP Total abstinence is natural to the Kangaroo-rat of thesouth-west deserts of the U.S.A. It has mastered a trickly problem of survival in an area virtually devoidof water and can now do without the stuff—indefinitely! A common rat forced to live under such conditionswould die in a few days. The secret lies in the Kangaroo- rat's ability to make use of metabolic water, formed bythe oxidation of parts of its food. Such food consists of simply dry seeds containing no more than 5-10%moisture, which it finds by night after a day spent in a cool sub-soil burrow. It has no sweat glands to disperse water; he otherwise 'functions' not at all, andmoreover, in the nose is a special chamber in which moisture from the breath is condensed and returnedto the body. Evolution and the acquisition of natural accessorieshave ensured the survival of this interesting creature. But when it comes to aircraft—and the safety of passengersand crew under hazardous conditions at sea — the ''evolution' of survival aids has essentially been .R.F.D'sproblem.
