Protea Airlines (formerly Volkslugdiens) is arecently-formed South African charter operator and started operations last year with an ex-Trek Airways Viking. It has authority to operate charter nights to Israel, Saudi Arabiaand throughout Africa, and has applied to operate services for non-Europeans in SouthAfrica and to the Middle East. Fleet: one Viking. Provincetown-Boston Airline Inc operatesfeeder services between Provincetown Muni- cipal Airport and Logan Airport, Boston.Head Office: Provincetown, Mass, USA. Executives: J. Purdue Aeronautics Corporation is an affiliateof Purdue University, and operates DC-3s for the professional pilot training programmes ofthe University's Aviation Technology Depart- ment. Qantas Empire Airways Ltd—QEA can traceits history back to 1920 when QANTAS (Queensland and Northern Territory AerialServices) was founded on November 16 of that year, and on November 2, 1922, the companyopened its first regular service between Charle- ville and Cloncurry. This was the first air ser-vice in eastern Australia and it was operated by Armstrong Whitworth FK.8 biplanes. Qantas Empire Airways Ltd was founded inJanuary 1934 by Qantas and Imperial Airways to operate the Singapore - Brisbane section of SAS has been operating Carovelles for nearly a year the England - Australia air route then about tobe established. In December 1959 Qantas and BO AC celebrated the 25 th anniversary of theKangaroo Route from Sydney to London through Asia—still the longest air route in theworld. Qantas was the first airline to operate round-the-world services through San Francisco and New York; these were inaugurated on January14, 1958, with L. 1049s. Qantas operates four round-the-world 707 services a week:two westbound from Sydney through Asia to London, New York, San Francisco and acrossthe Pacific, and two in the opposite direction. Qantas commenced trans-Pacific services in1954 when it took over the Sydney - Fiji - Honolulu - San Francisco and Vancouver routeof BCPA. The airline also operates from Sydney and Darwin to Port Moresby, Manila,Hong Kong and Tokyo; from Sydney, Mel- bourne and Perth to Johannesburg via theCocos Islands and Mauritius, and there is also an L.1049H all-freight service from Sydney toLondon. Quebecair Inc was incorporated in 1947 asRimouski Airlines Ltd and took its present name in 1953. Services are operated acrossand on either side of the St Lawrence from Montreal in the west to Sept lies, Ross Bayand Schefferville in the east and also from Rouyn/Noranda in central Quebec province.Head Office: Rimouski, PQ, Canada. Queensland Airlines Pry Ltd was the nametaken by Aircrafts Pty Ltd in 1947 when Butler Air Transport acquired control of thecompany by purchasing 93 per cent of the out- standing stock. Queensland Airlines is now asubsidiary of Ansett Transport Industries Ltd. Working under its separate identity, the airlineoperates a network of services covering 2,700 miles in Queensland and south to Sydney, NewSouth Wales. REAL SA Transportes Aereos was founded in1946 as Redes Estaduais Aereas Limitada (REAL), and operations began on February7 of that year between Sao Paulo and Rio with a single DC-3. By a series of mergers ofand acquisitions in no less than 14 Brazilian airlines REAL has become the largest airlinein South America. In 1954 an 87 per cent holding was acquired in Empresa de Trans-portes Aerovias Brasil SA and its subsidiary Aeronorte, and two years later REAL acquiredan 85 per cent holding in the Nacional Trans- portes Aereos consortium. Transportes AereosSalvador was acquired in 1957 but continues to operate under its own name. In additionto its Brazilian domestic services, which cover a considerable route mileage, REAL operates L.1049H services northwards to Port of Spain,Caracas, Miami, Bogota, Mexico City and Los Angeles as well as a C-46 freight service toMiami. This concernwas founded in 1932 but operated mainly charter services until 1948 when CAB grantedthe company a certificate of public convenience and necessity. Services are operated fromAnchorage through the Aleutians to Ami and the company is authorized to fly on an irregularbasis between any of its certificated points and the Pribilof Islands.Head Office: Anchorage, Alaska. Regina Cargo Airlines Inc is a US non-scheduled carrier. Fleet: two C-46, one DC-3. Reseau Aerien Interinsulaire—RAI beganservices in 1951, linking points in the Society Islands, some of which were previously servedby Air Tahiti and TRAPAS. Points served, apart from Papeete in Tahiti, are Huahine,Raiatea and Bora Bora. The French airline TAI has acquired a controlling share in RAI.Head Office: Papeete, Tahiti. Resort Airlines Inc is a US non-scheduledcarrier that specialises in the operation of inclusive holiday tours to the Caribbean andalso in military charter flying.
