The Firestreak pylons can be seen SERVICE AVIATION Air Force, Naval and Army Flying News More Sea Vixens A NEW Sea Vixen squadron, No 893,was being commissioned yesterday (September 1) at RNAS Yeovilton. Thecommanding officer is Lt Cdr F. D. Stanley. Last week the de Havilland Aircraft CoLtd announced that they had received an additional order for a batch of Sea Vixens,which carry four D.H. Firestreak missiles and 28 two-inch air-to-air rockets asarmament. RAF at Farnborough IN next week's SBAC flying display atFarnborough (September 5 to 11) the Royal Air Force will be represented byseven types of aircraft: Valiant, Vulcan and Victor; Lightning and Hunter; JetProvost; and Shackleton. The V-bombers, from Nos 148 (Valiant),617 (Vulcan) and 15 (Victor) Sqns, are to perform a daily "scramble." Each squad-ron is providing four aircraft and operating on different days. From Farnborough theywill fly to their respective bases. Four Lightnings, from No 74 Sqn (the first tobe equipped with these aircraft), are to fly past; and Hunters of Treble-One Sqn—the world-famous "Black Arrows"—are to carry out their formation aerobatic routine,initially with 18 aircraft (which will per- form a loop), then splitting into two teamsof nine. Aerobatics are also being per- formed by four Jet Provosts of the CentralFlying School, Little Rissington. A Shackleton from No 201 Sqn is to take offtowards the end of each day's display, returning at the beginning of the followingday's flying, having in the meanwhile been airborne continuously on a NATOexercise. The total RAF contribution will occupy nearly 30 minutes. NATO Gunnery Contest ~M"EXT Monday (September 5) the thirdx~ annual Allied Air Forces Central Europe air-to-air firing competition, forthe Guynemer Trophy, begins at the French Air Force firing range at Cazaux.It will continue until September 17. Eight teams are participating, from the FirstFrench Tactical Air Command, Belgian Air Force, RAF Germany, First CanadianAir Division (winners for the last two years), Royal Netherlands Air Force andNATO-assigned units of the Royal Danish Air Force, French Air Defence Commandand RAF Fighter Command. The com- petition consists of both camera-gun testsand live firing. The trophy, named after the French World War 1 fighter ace CaptGeorges Guynemer, is a silver cup donated by the Marcel Dassault company. Awards for AdventureT O perpetuate the memory of Lord Trenchard, founder of the Royal Air Force, the Air Council has instituted a number of annual cash grants which are to be known as Trenchard Memorial Men behind the scenes with Treble-One Sqn, which is again performing at Farnborough (see Col 1): at left, the adjutant, Fit Lt V. ("Tim") Woods, who acts as commentator during the squadron's displays; and below, Fit Sgt Dennis Cooper, the senior administrative NCO Awards. These will be made to individualsundertaking unconvential projects, and the scheme is open to all members of theRAF, WRAF and Princess Mary's RAF Nursing Service. The RAF Central Fund is makingavailable £2,500 a year, from which awards will be made. Assessment ofapplications (which should describe the proposed activity and indicate its estimatedcost) will be made by a committee of Air Ministry officers, headed by the AirMember for Personnel. This committee is to meet twice a year, in January andJuly, its first meeting being planned for January 1961. IN BRIEF Negotiations are in progress for the purchaseof D.H. Comet 4Cs for Transport Command. Officers commanding ATC Wings in Britainare to attend a six-day convention at Head- quarters Air Cadets, RAF White Wakham,from September 4 onwards. RAF Takali, in the George Cross island ofMalta, was "at home" to the public last Saturday (August 27). Aerobatics were beingperformed by the Fighter Command reserve aerobatic team, from No 92 Sqn, and by a soloHunter of the same squadron. A Hastings of No 70 Sqn was recentlyassigned to undertake a three-day shuttle ser- vice between El Adem in Libya and Kano inNigeria, at the request of the Nigerian authori- ties, to rescue about a hundred NigerianMuslims reported to be stranded in the Sahara. The MRES Officers' twelfth reunion will beheld in London on Saturday, October 29. Full particulars may be obtained by writing to SqnLdr P. E. A Canberra of No 58 Sqn, from RAF Wyton,made a wheels-up landing at Waddington on August 23 on a runway carpeted with foam bythe "sudsmobile" process Flight, August 19). This was the first time the technique had beenused at Wvton in an emergency. Neither of the crew members was injured. HMS Albion recently took off an injuredChinese seaman from the merchantman Twin- horse in the South China Sea, landing him atHong Kong. A Skyraider located the mer- chantman, which was about 60 miles awayfrom Albion when a call for help was received, and two Whirlwinds took part in the opera-tion of landing the carrier's MO and trans- ferring the seaman to her sick-bay.
