PLIGHT, 20 January 1961 81 COPYRIGHT Airliner Census JANUARY 1961 i Iliffe Transport Publications Ltd 1961 THIS is the fourth Flight Airliner Census, in which an attempthas been made to list every transport aeroplane in airlineservice throughout the world excluding the USSR and China. It is an extensive revision of the last edition published onOctober 2, 1959, and a great effort has been made to maintain a high standard of accuracy. Perfection in such a compilation as thisis unattainable, however, and we hope that users of this work will continue—as they have kindly done in the past—to suggestdeletion and additions. The same method of presentation as before has been adheredto: the aircraft are listed according to the nationality of their manufacturer, and each column has regional sub-divisions tomake reference and identification as easy as possible. A question mark against the name of an airline means that the number ofaircraft owned is not known. The letters (FS) after a number indicate that the aircraft in question are known to be up for sale,while the letter (L) after a number indicates that the aircraft in question are leased to the carrier, usually by another airline (e.g..Swissair's Caravelles are leased from SAS). Where aircraft have been modified to a later model—e.g., Convair 340s to 440s—theyare listed under their original type. Figures in parentheses refer to aircraft on order but not yet delivered.
