FLIGHT International, 4 January 196. SERVICE AVIATION Air Force, Naval and Army Flying News Royally Commended A BOMBER COMMAND pilot, Sqn Ldr C. D. Preece. was recently commended for gallantry and awarded the Queen's Com mendation for Valuable Service in the Air. The citation in the London Gazette an nouncing this award said that it had been given " for outstanding skill and devotion to duty in successfully landing his Valiant aircraft after the elevator controls had jammed." Sqn Ldr Preece is with 18 Sqn at RAF Finningley, near Doncaster. "Bulwark's" Future Equipment ANSWERING a question in the Commons recently about the re-equipment of HMS Bulwark, the Commando carrier, with Westland Wessex helicopters, the Civil Lord of the Admiralty, Mr C. Ian Orr- Ewing, said that a number of electrical and structural changes would have to be made in the vessel. "These alterations would have considerably lengthened her normal refit, which took place at Singapore immediately after Kuwait," he said. "Such a procedure was obviously undesirable while we had only a single Commando carrier. HMS Bulwark is to be equipped with the Wessex after her next refit." Controlling Ground Training A NEW DIRECTORATE-GENERAL, with responsibility for ground training, has been formed at Air Ministry. It absorbs the former Directorate of Staff Training and Directorate of Technical Training and the first holder of the title Director-General of Ground Training will be AVM M. K. D. Porter, CB, CBE, AMIEE. Policy for and Air Ministry control of all non-flying training schools—including the Staff colleges, RAF contribution to the Imperial Defence College, Joint Services Staff College and the technical training schools—will be under the new directorate. Gp Capt N. Ford, RAAF, who is to command RAAF Butterworth in Malaya with the acting rank of air commodore. Formerly Director- General of Organization in the Department of Air, Canberra, he succeeds Air Cdre G. C. Hartnell, who is to become Director-Genera/ of Plans and Policy IN BRIEF A SPITFIRE 14 on display at RAF Hornchurch. RM694, has been offered by the Air Council to the Kingsford Smith Memorial Collec tion at Canberra in Australia. THE REV DR ARCHIBALD MCHARDY has been unanimously re-elected chairman of the Scottish branch of the RAF Benevolent Fund for a further term of four years. TWO OF THE PRINCIPAL PRIZES at the graduition parade of 91 Entry at No 1 School of Technical Training, RAF Halton. the Mons2ignor Beauchamp Memorial prize and the Quinton Memorial Trophy, were won by WO/AA R. Bogg. A HISTORY OF 233 Sqn, at present based at Aden and equipped with Valettas, is being compiled and they would appreciate hearing from anyone who can help with information or photographs.
