This study of Vulcan XA902 landing at Luqa, Malta, was taken by "Flight" reader Godfrey Hare SERVICE AVIATION Air Force, Naval and Army Flying News Mr Amery in America MAKING A NEW YEAR VISIT to Canada and the United States, the Air Minister, Mr Julian Amery, left Lyneham on Tuesday of last week in a Britannia of RAF Transport Command. His visit to Canada has involved meetings with Minis ters and Service chiefs in Ottawa, and tours of RCAF Rockcliffe and air defence units at North Bay, Ont. Mr Amery was flying to Washington last Friday for a visit to the Pentagon followed by a tour of USAF establishments at the invitation of the Secretary of the Air Force, Mr Eugene M. Zuckert. The Air Minister was being accompanied by the VCAS, Air Chief Marshal Sir Edmund Hudleston. AOC 11 Group A NEW FIGHTER COMMAND APPOINTMENT takes effect next Saturday, January 13, AVM G. T. B. Clayton, CB, DFC, becoming AOC No 11 Group. Until recently Director of Operations (Air Transport) at Air Ministry, and before that at SHAPE, AVM Clayton flew in Bomber Command during the war and was awarded the DFC in 1940 and a Bar to it in 1944. He served in China in a special duty appointment and holds two Chinese decorations. New Year Promotions TWO NEW AIR MARSHALS and eight new air vice-marshals are named in the January 1, 1962, RAF promotions list. AVMs D. G. Morris and Sir John Grandy are promoted to air marshal, and the eight new AVMs are: Air Cdres K. V. Garside, R. B. Thomson, A. A. Case and G. T. B. Clayton in the general duties branch; T. N. Coslett and R. H. E. Emson in the technical branch; and T. C. MacDonald and G. H. Morley in the medical branch. There are 12 new air commodores, promoted from group cap tain, as follows: in the GD branch, A. G. Dudgeon, J. H. Greswell, E. J. Morris, R. H. C. Burwell, P. H. Cribb, S. B. Grant, A. H. C. Boxer and L. D. Mavor; in the technical branch, A. Foden; in the equip ment branch, K. H. Gooding; in the secretarial branch, W. N. Hibbert; and in the medical branch, J. C. Taylor. Engineering and Equipment Controller FROM FEBRUARY 1 there is to be a new Controller of Engineering and Equipment at Air Ministry, AVM J. D. Baker-Carr, CB, CBE, AFC, taking over this appointment with the acting rank of air marshal. He succeeds Air Marshal Sir Herbert Spreckley, KBE, CB, who is retiring from the RAF. The new controller was AOC No 41 Mainten ance Group from May 1959 until it closed last August and prior to that was Senior Technical Staff Officer at Fighter Command. 60 FLIGHT International, 11 January 1962 He was awarded the AFC in 1944 for his part in the air firing trials with rocket pro jectiles from Hurricanes and Typhoons against tanks and locomotives. Exercise "Life Line" A LOGISTIC EXERCISE involving 38 Group and 3 Division of the Army is being held from next Tuesday, January 16, to the following Saturday. Its aim is "to test the capacity of 38 Group and associated Army units to maintain a high intensity of air mainten ance, together with offensive support." The medium range transport force is to operate from RAF Colerne with airheads at Merrifield (Somerset) and Keevil (Wilt shire). 2nd ATAF SASO NEW SENIOR AIR STAFF OFFICER at 2nd Allied Tactical Air Force headquarters in Germany, Air Cdre D. M. Strong, AFC, was formerly in' the Air' Secretary's branch at Air Ministry. During the war he was with No 10 OTU at Abingdon, then flew on operations with a Wellington squadron, No 104, but was reported missing in August 1941 and until May 1945 was a POW. A pre-war member of the RAF rugby team, he was chairman of the RAF Rugby Union from 1954 to 1956. WG CDR i. D. BOLTON, DFC, one of the original members of Glasgow UAS (in 1941), has taken over command of the squadron, following completion of a Staff College course. He succeeds Wg Cdr D. M. Finn, DFC, who becomes Wing Commander Admin at RAF Khormaksar, Aden. RELICS OF THE EARLY DAYS of military avia tion are wanted by the RAF Central Flying School at Little Rissington, which celebrates its golden jubilee this year. The Com mandant, Air Cdre H. P. Connolly, is hoping to mark the occasion by establishing a full-scale museum and appeals to anyone with relics of early CFS days or of the RFC to send them to Little Rissington.
