There she stands on the end of the runway, watched by the people who designed and made her. Everything the company stands for goes with her. For a few moments she embodies, with a poignancy that is almost unbearable, the fallibility of aeronautical science. Exact though this science is. evervone asks himself: Will she fly? An evening paper commented on the Lovat green tweed suit that John Cunning ham was v. earing as he casually walked out of the hangar to take the Trident up on her first flight. I think I know what was on the reporter's mind. Somehow, so great was the occasion, one felt that Mr Cunningham ought to have been driven up in an oxygen transfer vehicle escorted by a corps of factory police on motor-cycles followed by the Works Fire Brigade brass band. It would be dawn, of course, and he would be wreathed in hissing lox vapour, his silver and black flying suit glinting in the flood lights. And, naturally, he would be carrying a portable suit refrigerator. It wasn't quite like that. And the Trident flew, and flew perfectly, in the hands of a man wearing a Lovat green tweed suit. Now, I find, the Tu-124 has been dubbed Cookpot. This I consider an injustice to an inter-city airliner. It should at least have been Fleshpot. And considering that this is a short-haul turbofan airliner already in bdng (and in being for well over a year) the NATO nomenclaturists might more appropriately have made it the Jackpot. Anyway, as I say, the whole system is delightfully crackpot. • '"A huge bird attacked a KLM Friend ship on Monday at Khuzistan, injuring the pilot and one of the stewards, it was re ported yesterday. The species of bird was not identified but witnesses said it looked like an eagle. "Mr Bosch, co-pilot, tried to avoid the bird but it came straight for the plane and made repeated attacks on the window panel. The bird continued its attacks and finally broke through the window into the cockpit. The steward, Mr Sohakian, went into the cockpit to help the pilot but as soon as he entered the bird attacked him .. . Efforts to catch the bird failed and it flew out again." The chief designer of Thinx Electronics Ltd, Dr Breakthrough, was looking through the specification of a new aircraft, whose AS1 and altimeter are to be remotely operated by synchros. "Thinx thinks it has the answer," declared Dr Breakthrough. "Details can't yet be released but here's the scheme in broad outline. "One member of the crew will wear special shoes fitted with stainless steel soles and thermocouples. When the instruments fail during an approach the crew member hangs out of the aircraft dragging his shoes along the runway. The friction heat is sensed by the thermocouple, passed through a small transistorized amplifier strapped to the left thigh, and indicated on an instrument strapped to the right arm. Friction will be directly related to speed over the ground, though a small computer will be needed to factor the readings for ambient temperature, moisture, runway surface texture and foot pressure on the runway. The amplifier will weigh 11.9741b and will measure 8in 8in x lin." I understand that initial trials will be made next week with an office boy towed along the M1 behind Dr Breakthrough's E-type Jaguar. BALPA is reported to be very interested, though it wants a periscope through which the pilot can watch the crew member hanging below the aircraft. • Why three engines ? Well, say BEA, the requirement in the case of the Trident was "more than two, less than four." One of th • annoying things about engines, especially for the aircraft designer, is that you can't install fractions of them. But the foregoing definition is a bit glib. Why two engines?
