102 FLIGHT International, 18 January 1962 Staff College Commandant NEW COMMANDANT of the RAF Staff College, AVM D. J. P. Lee, CB, CBE, takes up this post after having been AOC Air Forces Middle East (Aden) since August 1959. Last summer he was Air Commander during the Kuwait operations. This is not his first connection with the Staff College, for he went to Bracknell in 1946 as a member of the directing staff. FAA Promotions FOUR CAPTAINS ARE NAMED in the half- yearly list of Fleet Air Arm promotions, promoted from commander. They are as follows, with their present or previous appointments: J. M. Henry, NATO; W. I. Campbell, late Commander (Air) HMS Hermes; J. D. Treacher, staff of the Flag Officer Air (Home); and H. C. N. Goodhart, HMS Excellent. Promotions from lieutenant commander to commander are as follows: H. M. A. Hayes, Naval Air Division (Admiralty); D. H. D. Merrin, staff of Flag Officer Air (Home); J Ashton, CO 825 Sqn; S, Leonard, HMS Hermes; W. R. Hart, AFC, RN Staff College (formerly CO 890 Sqn); B. J. Williams, CO 831 Sqn; F. P. Brooke- Popham, HMS Centaur; A. K. Hall, RNAS Arbroath; C. M. Caldecott, Air craft Dept (Admiralty); C. M. Jenne, HMS Centaur; and J. Hood, AiMechE, HMS Thunderer. These promotions are provisional selec tions, to date from June 30 this year. J ASS Award THE DUNNING MEMORIAL CUP, awarded to the squadron achieving the highest stan dard on the course at the Joint Anti submarine School, Londonderry, has been awarded for 1961 jointly to two Shackleton squadrons, Nos 38 and 204. They tied for first place, only 1.4 per cent ahead of No 42 Sqn. The cup will be held for the first six months by 38 Sqn, which is com manded by Wg Cdr A. W. Harding and based at Luqa, Malta, then for the re mainder of the year by 204 Sqn, com manded by Wg Cdr R. D. Roe, at RAF Ballykelly, Northern Ireland. A C-l 19 ofRCAF Air Transport Command, which operates these aircraft in 435 '"Chinthe") and (36 ("Elephant") Sqns and at the Canadian joint Air Training Centre, Rivers, Man. They recently participated in Operation "Qui Vive II," an exercise to evaluate the preparedness and air movemem capability of the UN standby forces in Canada SERVICE AVIATION Air Force, Naval and Army Flying News This award is based on the efficiency of each crew in tactics, signals procedure, captaincy, performance in synthetic ground trainers and general results of sea-air exercises when simulated attacks are made on submarines. It was instituted in memory of Sqn Cdr E. H. Dunning, DSC, RNAS, who on August 2, 1917, was the first pilot to alight on a ship under way when he landed a Sopwith Pup on HMS Furious, which had not then been con verted into an aircraft carrier. He lost his life five days later while making further attempts. THE RAF CENTRAL FLYING SCHOOL is tO receive the freedom of Cheltenham on May 2. The Queen Mother, as Comman- dant-in-Chief, is to attend the ceremony. A 56 SQN REUNION DINNER, for past and present members, is being held on February 10. DURING 1961 the Canadian aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure steamed 42,000 miles and was at sea for 178 days. In thai period her aircraft made a total of 2,644 deck landings. SEA HERONS of 781 Sqn, Royal Navy, which was the subject of an article in Flight for December 28, 1961 ("The Navy's Airline"), are to be equipped at de Havilland Air craft with Sperry AL30 Gyro Pilots. The Herons were formerly operated by Jersey Airlines. A 201 SQN SHACKLETON recently made a continuous search at 1,000ft in rain and cloud for a 40ft boat missing between Wick and Lerwick, returning to St Mawgan after being airborne for a total of I4hr. The aircraft was captained by Fit Lt L. L Lawless, a navigator. Wg Cdr W. R. Fitter, personal pilot to Mr Menzies ani OC RAAF VIP and Special Transport flying operations, who was awarded a Bar to his AFC in the New Year Honours Island airfield: a model of RAF Gan, Maldive Islands, Indian Ocean, at last week's Directorate-Generd of Works exhibition at Air Ministry.
