110 FLIGHT International. 18 January 196: INDUSTRY International .. . BV5, designed primarily for road research. The standard production runway tester is a smaller device, designated BV6, which can be towed behind a Land-Rover or large car. The principle is that between the two main wheels of the trailer is mounted a slightly smaller wheel which can be con strained to rotate at the same angular velocity to give a slip of about 15 per cent. The torque in the shaft between the wheels is logged on a chart recorder. The BV6, which weighs some 2,4001b, is being modi fied to investigate the relationship between runway slush and rolling resistance. Auto- Products AB Ltd (Export Division), Linnegatan 18, Stockjolm O) have been organizing demonstrations of the testers. "Tape-O-Matic" Drill Pratt & Whitney Co Inc (not the aero-engine firm, but a major industrial component of Fairbanks Whitney Corporation, 745 Fifth Avenue, NY 22) claim a "price breakthrough'* with a new transistorized numerically-controlled drilling machine, which sells in the US for under S10.000. This price is certainly substantially less than that for previous American tape-controlled tools, and fuller information will be published in the February issue of our sister-journal Aircraft Production. Big Changes at Douglas Reproduced on this page are architect's renderings of major facilities to be built for Douglas Aircraft Co Inc. One of the structures, costing S7m, will comprise a nine-storey adminis trative headquarters for the Aircraft Division (85,000 sq ft) and a three-storey engineering and product-development building (307,000 sq ft). These facilities, which will be ready for occupation next October, will adjoin the present plant on Lakewood Boulevard, Long Beach. Previously the division had been centred at the traditional home in Santa Monica. The move, say Douglas, "is a logical. . . follow-up to the recent realignment into product-oriented divisions and the consol idation of all aircraft operations at Long Mr F.
