FLIGHT International, 1 February 196. Starting-up procedure: note the Palouste ground power supplier (at left) PROVING THE BUCCANEER . with flight safety and assists Instructor Lt Cdr D. C. Bain, who is an aeronautical engineer, in drawing up performance and evaluation assessments; Lt M. J. Hornblower is responsible for weapons systems (also owning a splendid vintage Bentley with the appro priate registration NA39); Lt G. B. Hoddinott deals with PR and trials co-ordination (as well as looking after the unit's "line book"); Lt W. W. Foote, on secondment from the United States Navy, is assistant air weapons instructor. Lt W. P. Ryce has no specialist function apart from his pilot duties; Lt R. E. M. Greenop is Staff Officer, prior to becoming a transport pilot with 781 Sqn. Likewise, some of the seven observers on the flight have special duties under the general aegis of the Senior Observer, Lt Cdr Coleman. Lt M. C. Clapp is systems officer; Lt W. H. Stewart is in charge of navigation; Lt P. M. Carver of operations studies; and Lt S. D. Mather of squadron statistics. The other observers are Lts P. H. Cummuskey and D. J. Ellin. For observers, Cdr Leahy points out, the Buccaneer "involves problems new to the Fleet Air Arm." Chief among these, it may be supposed, are the facts that the aircraft is designed as a bomber, for operations at low level with a variety of weapons and that to carry out this task it is equipped for electronic navigation. All the observers with 700Z have had either night-flying, helicopter or airborne early warning experi ence, or something of all three. In the Buccaneers, pilot and observer form an integrated crew; though at Lossiemouth, individual pilots and observers do not specifically fly as crews. In the squadrons, no doubt, a regularity of association will prevail. There already existed, before 700Z Flight was formed, a small but learned body of "know-how" on the Buccaneer in the Royal Navy, based upon handling trials at A & AEE Boscombe Down and association with company test pilots from Holme-on-Spalding Moor. This knowledge was enlarged when the nominated members of 700Z went to Blackburn Aircraft before the flight was formed, to Personalities of 700Z: top, the CO, Cdr A.J. Leahy; far left, the Senior Pilot, Lt Cdr £. R. Anson (right), with one of the observers, Lt P. M. Carver; right, Lt 8. R. Toomey; below, left to right: Lts J. P. Williams, M. J. Hornblower and D. J. Ellin
