FLIGHT International, 1 February 1962 181 National Gliding Championships for Aston Down This year's National Gliding Championships will be held during June 2-11 at the RAF airfield at Aston Down, Gloucestershire. They will be organized by the British Gliding Association although, according to the Air Ministry, the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association "will shoulder a large portion of the task of running and administering them." Record Year for RAFGSA The RAF Gliding and Soaring Association achieved in 1960-61 the busiest year in its 12-year history. During the 12 months ending October 31, 1961 its 2,250 members logged 54,094 launches and 7,421 flying hours. Over 200 first solos were made and over 250 Silver Cs, 18 Gold C legs and seven Gold C diamonds were gained. There are at present 16 member-clubs, comprising 14 in England, one at Lossiemouth, Scotland and one at Ballykelly, Northern Ireland. At the annual general meeting of the association, the president, Air Chief Marshal Sir Theodore McEvoy, presented Sgt John Williamson with a genuine-gold Gold C badge with three real dia monds to mark his becoming the first RAFGSA member to qualify for the triple-diamond award. Tiger Club Calendar With four new aircraft types on the Tiger Club's fleet for 1962, an active season lies ahead. The club's programme includes flying displays at Panshanger (April 23), Sywell (June 11), Wolverhampton (June 24), Fair Oaks (August 6), Shoreham (August 19), and Southampton or Tollerton on Septem ber 16; and an At Home at Redhill on May 27. March 2 is the date of the club's annual dinner. Current membership subscriptions, which include the use of Fair Oaks facilities, are £4 4s (associate), £3 3s (full), £2 2s (passenger) and £1 Is (overseas). Jet Commander Orders With delivery of Aero Commander's Model 1121 Jet Commander planned to begin late next year, the company has "assigned production positions" for 12 of the new machines, "Most" of the positions are stated to have been assigned to companies planning to modernise their corporate fleets, and four Aero Commander distributors have placed orders for Model 1121s to be used as demonstrators. These firms are Santa Monica Aviation (California); Reading Air Service (Pennsylvania); Brown Aero Corporation of Dallas, Texas; and National Aero Sales, Chicago. Tropical Coolers A 10,000-mile business flight to West Africa was recently completed by Mr George A. Farley, export sales manager and pilot of Lee Refrigeration Ltd, in the company's Piper Comanche 250. The aircraft, equipped with VOR, ADF and Cockpit close-up of Mr S. W. Charles of Aero Commander 90-channel VHF, carried desert survival equipment, publicity material and small components for distribution among the custom ers visited. Mr Farley was accompanied by Mr David Purley, son of the Lee chairman and joint managing director. Another export trip, to the Mediterranean area, is to be made in the Comanche later this month.
