Reference to the division was made in our news pages last week 190 formerly relied on radio teleprinter net works, which were subject to atmospheric interference. Scotice, as the new cable is called, was manufactured and laid by Standard Tele phones and Cables Ltd undera £lm contract on behalf of the British GPO and Danish and Icelandic telephone authorities. The next stage will be the laying of the Icecan cable between Iceland, Greenland and Canada, providing a direct link across the northern route. Icecan is to be finished in December. Certain voice and telegraph circuits in these cables are leased for aero nautical use, the remainder serving normal communications. The paths of the various cables are illustrated on the preceding page. The proposal to lease cable circuits replaced the original scheme for a VHF forward scatter link, which proved very expensive and technically difficul ILS for Athens Pye Telecommunications Ltd have received an order for installation of their directional ILS on the main runway at Athens Airport. This brings the number of airfields with Pye ILS to 138. King Radio Distributors In these columns on January 11 the distributors for King Radio Corp equipment were noted as Vigors Aviation. Airwork Ltd at Christchurch and A. J. Whittemore (Aeradio) Ltd at Biggin Hill are also distributors. Products 39ft Beryllium Extrusions After three years of work under contract to the US Air Force, Northrop Corporation announce their ability to extrude U-channels 39ft long in beryllium. Three times the previous Half-inch armour-plate glass being balanced for a clear-view screen designed for use in ground-effect craft at wind speeds of up to I50kt. George Kent Ltd, the mechanical and electronic instrument makers, of Luton, first introduced the clear-view screen 50 years ago. This type of screen is now under study at RAF. Farnborough, where wind tunnel tests are being made of devices to improve visibility through windscreens in rain maximum, this length is achieved by con trolling the original metal brick (3in dia meter, 17in long and weighing some 81b) at 1,725°F and using steel and copper lubricants to achieve a flaw-free result, with a thickness of 0.06in and a surface '"as smooth as aluminium extrusions." Test extrusions were produced for Northrop by Nuclear Metals Inc, of Concord, Mass. Amplivox MoA Contract A "substantial"" Mo A contract has been awarded to Amplivox Ltd for boom-microphone ear-defender headsets to be used by RAF Transport and Coastal Command aircrew, and by passen gers in Army helicopters. Trident Fire Protection The Pyrene Co Ltd have contributed smoke-detecting and smoke-indicating equipment to the D.H.121 Trident. A special version of the Pyrene PSDAI/G4 aircraft smoke detector is fitted, providing warning of fire, whether the aircraft is in flight or on the ground; and a Pyrene visual smoke indicator, type ASLD3F, is incorporated which confirms and identifies alarm signals from the smoke detector. The indicator, operating in conjunction with a suction unit, is connected through pipelines to the spaces to be pro tected. The unit is constantly drawing air through pipes, and in the event of fire breaking out in any of the protected com partments the smoke detector is activated; and by pressing a button on the indicator an inspection window for the appropriate pipeline is illuminated, showing where the outbreak has occurred. Elektro- technik, for whom Telemechanics Ltd have been appointed sole UK agents, is the VHF measuring generator Type 2006. Specified features are a range of 10-240Mc/s, accuracy 0.5 per cent, amplitude and frequency modulation facilities, and output voltage 50mV to 0.5/xV, continuously variable. Internal amplitude modulation is 1,000c < — 5 percent and external modulation facili ties 20c/s to lOOkc/s. Further details may be obtained from Telemechanics Ltd. Brokenford Lane, Totton, Southampton. Hants (Totton 3666).
