Prefabricated clean-room by John Boss Ltd (news-item below). The air-conditioning unit can be seen on the right 342 FLIGHT International, 1 March 1%2 the Lancaster flown by Mr T. C. Marks whom he succeeded as chief test pilot. Mr Dickinson, who served during the war with RAF Fighter and Bomber Commands, joined Flight Refuelling in 1956 from RAE Llanbedr. Mr Bolger is well acquainted, from his three-and-a-half years' service at Llanbedr, with the Meteor drones produced by the company. Ekco Director Mr C. A. W. Harmer, OBE, deputy chairman of Pye Ltd, has been appointed to the board of Ekco Electronics Ltd. INDUSTRY International Products Jet Tachometer Racal Instruments Ltd, Bracknell, Berks, have announced the Type SA.509 jet engine speed tachometer, a development of the existing Racal tacho meter. It provides facilities for measuring r.p.m. of both 1-p and h-p shafts, and for the accurate calibration of the high and low speed governors of the engines. It is designed for direct operation on the flight deck from the aircraft power supply, the signal outputs from the engine-driven tacho-generators being fed to four sockets mounted at an accessible point to which the instrument is connected. Front-panel con trols have been kept to a minimum, and complete connection of the equipment for use takes less than two minutes. Weighing 351b, the SA.509 is completely portable, and power supply and signal input cables are stored within the instrument box. Prefabricated Clean-rooms The firm of John Bass Ltd, of Crawley, Sussex, have long specialized in the design and produc tion of equipment for ultra-clean assembly, from dustproof cabinets to complete suites of controlled-atmosphere rooms. Their latest venture in this field, and one that has met with quick success, is the intro duction of a range of prefabricated clean- rooms. Within a few weeks of the prelimin ary announcement the Admiralty placed an order for five of these rooms, and another customer has been the Israel Ministry of Defence. Completely prefabricated to a standard pattern, this type of clean-room can be used singly, or multiplied by additional units at any subsequent time. Easily erected by the customer's own works engineering department, it is semi-portable and can thus be moved to a new site should the necessity arise. The timber frame structure is faced on both sides with a hard glossy plastic laminate which will not generate dust and which, by its electrostatic properties, will retain any minute particles until routine cleaning takes place. The walls are insu lated internally with 2in of expanded poly styrene. All windows are flush with the inside walls and fluorescent lighting is through glass panels outside the roof structure. Entry is via an air-lock, of similar construction to the room, with a bench for changing purposes. The doors to this section are electrically interlocked. A self-contained air-conditioning unit, giving filtration down to 1 micron, stands on its own base and is connected to the room by a short run of ducting. It dis charges through deflector grilles which can be adjusted to eliminate draughts. Humidi- fication and dehumidification equipment, which can be supplied as extras if required, will control relative humidity to within plus or minus 5 per cent. Depending on size, the rooms are avail able at prices from £1,500 ex works.
