This B.E.2c's Propeller is being presented by the Air Ministry to the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa, where the aircraft is now exhibited. The propeller, Lewis gun and pieces of Zeppelin L.32 which was shot down by the aircraft were presented by the pilot, Qp Capt F. Sowrey (now retired, he is third from the left in the group), to Air Ministry some years ago. The propeller is being restored to the B.E.2c as a result of a letter about the aircraft and a photograph published in "Flight" on October 12 last year ' WORLD NEWS . . . Jacqueline Cochran Honoured The General Electric Trophy, awarded annually by the company "for significant achievement in aviation," has been presented to Miss Jacqueline Cochran for her achievement in setting up eight new speed, distance and altitude records in a T-38 Talon, in the course of demonstration flights for North rop Corporation between August and October last year. US Research The total US Government bill for research and development for Fiscal Year 1963 (which starts next July 1) will be $12,300m, 20 per cent up on FY62. Some 75 per cent of the total is accounted for by "aerospace" programmes, of which the largest single item is the $863.6m voted for manned spaceflight beyond Project Mercury. Although small by comparison, the Federal Aviation Agency's ?65m for R&D on new airways control systems is several times the aggregate expenditure of all other countries in this field. The stamp on the envelope, a 3 cent Newfound land, is overprinted "First transatlantic air post April 1919." This cover, which went to a Continental dealer, was sold for £625, believed to be a record for that type of stamp on such a cover. A. J. Whittemore We record with regret that Mr A. J. ("Jim") Whittemore, chairman and managing director of A. J. Whittemore (Aeradio) Ltd, aircraft radio, radar and electronics engineers, died suddenly last month at the early age of 42.
