368 FLIGHT International, 8 March 1962 New AOA, NEAF A CYPRUS POST has been announced for Air Cdre W. V. Crawford-Compton, CBE, DSO, DFC: from April 30 he is to be Air Officer in charge of Administration, Near East Air Force. A New Zealander, Air Cdre Crawford-Compton was one of the outstanding fighter pilots of the last war. He won the DFC in March 1942 with 485 Sqn, RNZAF; a Bar to it nine months later while with 611 (West Lanes) Sqn, AAF; then in September 1943 the DSO, and a Bar to it in January 1945. In all he flew a total of 591 sorties. Last year he com pleted the IDC course. Battle of Britain "At Homes" SIXTEEN STATIONS in seven of the eight RAF Commands will be "at home" to the public on September 15, the Saturday in Battle of Britain week. By Commands, the stations open will be as follows:— Bomber: Gaydon, War wicks; Finningley, Yorks; Cottesmore. Rutland; Waddingto'n. Lines; and Wyton, Hunts. Fighter: Middleton St George, Co Durham; Leuchars, Fife; Coltishall. Norfolk. Coastal: Aldergrove, Nl. Transport: Benson, Oxon. Flying Training: Acklington, Northumber land; Biggin Hill, Kent; Hullavington, Wilts; Shawbury, Salop. Technical Training: 5/ Athan, Glam. Signals: Tangmere, Sussex. Eastleigh Display ROYAL VISITORS to RAF Eastleigh, Nairobi, on February 21 were the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester; and in their honour the station staged what is described as "one of the most spectacular flying displays ever seen in Kenya." This consisted of fly pasts by Hunters and a Vulcan; troop- and supply-dropping by a Beverley of 30 Sqn and a supply drop by a Twin Pioneer of 21 Sqn. Four Hunters of 8 Sqn, from Khormaksar, Aden, ended the display with an exhibition of formation aerobatics. Static aircraft included a Beverley loaded Commanding officer of the new Tribal class frigate HMS "Ashanti," Cdr D. Hepworth, stepping onto the flight deck after flying to his ship in a Westland Wasp during trials off Portland. THE RAF BENEVOLENT FUND has received a donation of 50 guineas from the Desert Locust Survey in East Africa in gratitude for assistance given by a Beverley of the RAF. AIR TRAINING CORPS SQUADRONS for appren tices are to be formed at each of the factories of the Pressed Steel Co Ltd. The company, with plants at Cowley, Swindon, Linwood (near Paisley), Swansea and Theale, has decided that the work which the appren tices do in the squadrons will be regarded as "a positive contribution to their train ing." ONE OF THE ORIGINAL 12 instructors who helped to launch Lord Trenchard's RAF apprenticeship scheme 39 years ago, Mi Cecil ("Clev") Cleverley, retired on February 27. He was one of those responsible for training the first intake at the then No I (Training) Wireless School at RAF Flower- down, Winchester, in 1923. Before retire ment he saw the 100th entry arrive at the same school, now known as No I Radii' School, RAF Locking, Som. WESTLAND WHIRLWINDS OF 228 SQN picked up the crew of a Canberra which crashed into the sea while making an emergency landing at RAF Leuchars on February 21 One of the pilots of the two helicopters involved, M Pit Carl Stubbs, reported afterwards that conditions were foggy and the sea glassy calm. He commented: "'We like to have a little more wind to lift when we are doing a wet winch. However, we got the men off in time. The whole opera tion took 20 minutes."
