484-485 FLIGHT International, 29 March 1962 SPORT AND B U S I N ESS JetStar Visits London • AST WEEK the eleventh production Lockheed JetStar stopped •• at London (Gatwick) to start a European demonstration tour prior to its delivery to the Indonesian Government. More than 40 JetStars have now been ordered, including 16 for the USAF. Among some 30 delivered are seven to the USAF and civil versions to Krupp, Corning Glass, T. Eden and Co, Canadian Department of Transport, Superior Oil, Continental Oil, Ford Motor Co, and other organizations. Lockheed have, of course, standardized the four-engined version with P & W JT12s giving 3,0001b take-off thrust each. Early intake- behaviour troubles have been cured by the cruciform intake split ters; and the fuel capacity has been increased by the bulky glove tanks to 2,580 US gal. Either JP-1 or JP-4 fuel can be used without adjustment. Lockheed representatives at Gatwick reported that the JetStar had a range of 1,900 n.m. "with VFR reserves." Cruising consumption was 5001b/hr per engine at M0.75 at 41,000ft. On a typical flight of 1,871 n.m. starting with full fuel, the JetStar had reached the let-down point with 3,5001b of fuel remaining and had landed 20min later. A step climb cruise was started at 33,000ft and M0.745 and taken via M0.76 at 39,OOOft to M0.82 at 40,000ft. The cabin of the demonstrator was furnished soberly, with six adjustable seats and a two-place couch distributed either side of the trench, which gave standing head-room. Toilet and galley were aft and a neat lobby and baggage-space forward. The military high-density transport can accommodate 14. Lockheed are also offering a high-priority freighter version for rushing small spares to missile areas. A navaid calibration version has already been sold and has a constant-frequency AC electrical system in contrast to the standard DC starter-generator system. Cabin pressure differ ential is 8.91b/sq in, giving sea-level conditions at up to 30,000ft and 6,500ft cabin altitude at 40,000ft. The JetStar gained its FAA transport-type certificate last A ugust
