FLIGHT International, 5 April 1962 built by the customer, but Autoset can and do supply similar equipment, apart from their wide range of component fittings with pneumatic tyres from 9in upwards or solid tyres from 6in upwards. Tyres for the B-70 Qualification-testing by USAF Aeronautical Systems Division at Wright-Patterson AFB has demonstrated the ability of a new tyre by B. F. Goodrich Co to complete the prescribed number of simulated B-70 flight cycles with no appreciable deterioration. In the original design of the B-70 the compartments housing the retracted main bogies were Positively no deception: a kettle can be boiled on the B-70 tyre after the latter has been soaked at 360°F (see news-item above) refrigerated, but the new Goodrich tyre has to meet a requirement for soaking for several hours at 360°F between each take-off and landing. No conventional tyre could complete a single cycle. To meet the arduous require ments Goodrich have evolved both a new carcase material and new concepts in construction claimed to make the new tyre "stronger, smaller and lighter than conventional aircraft tyres of equivalent load capacity." Company News Joining Ferranti Ferranti Ltd announce the appointment of Mr R. M. M. (Tim) Biden as sales manager of the company's Inertial Systems Department at Edin burgh. Mr Biden joined Ferranti in February of this year from the de Havilland Aircraft Co Ltd, where he was area manager for sales of civil and military aircraft in West Africa. Before that, and after 1939-45 service in the RAF, he had been concerned with the export of Vampires and then with the sale of D.H. light aircraft in Europe, the Middle East and West Africa. 531 Tool Makers' Guest The chairman of the Dowty Group, Sir George Dowty, FRAes, MiMechE, is to be guest of honour and chief speaker at the next trade luncheon of the Gauge and Tool Makers' Association being held at the Connaught Rooms, London, on April 27. S. G. Brown Changes Hawker Siddeley Aviation announce that Mr F. W. J. Gale, OBE, deputy chairman of S. G. Brown Ltd, has arranged to retire after 34 years' service with the company, which was acquired in June 1960 by the de Havilland Aircraft Co in association with the Bosch Arma Cor poration. Mr R. G. McCoy, BSc(Eng), AFRAes, MSLAE, executive director of Hawker Siddeley Engineering, becomes managing director of S. G. Brown from April 1. Mr Gale, who was appointed managing director of S. G. Brown in 1942, became deputy chairman in 1961. Mr McCoy has been executive director of Hawker Siddeley Engineering since May last year. He was previously general manager of the de Havilland Aircraft Co, who have a con trolling interest in S. G. Brown Ltd, acquired from the Admiralty. Mr James Gregory We record with regret that Mr James Gregory, a founder- member and director of the G.Q. Parachute Co and works manager of the company for 30 years, died recently at his home in Woking at the age of 60. He was a member of the RAF Parachute Test Unit at Martle- sham from 1918, later joined Calthrops— designers and manufacturers of the "Guard ian Angel" parachute—then went to the Russel Co, who manufactured the Russel "Lobe" parachute. His association with the late Sir Raymond Quilter began in the early 1930s. Sir Raymond described Mr Gregory as "probably the most know ledgeable and unassuming member of the parachute industry." Rolls-Royce Exports Exports of aero engines and spares by Rolls-Royce Ltd during last year were worth £55.2m, or over £1,380 for every employee in the com pany's Aero Engine Division. These ex ports, mainly of civil turbine engines and spares, account for more than one-third of total exports by the entire British aircraft and engine industry. Exports on this scale have been made possible by the widespread sale of airliners with the company's tur bine engines. A total of 1,200 airliners with Rolls-Royce engines have now been sold, this figure representing more than half the turbine-powered airliners in the western world. These engines power ten types of British airliner—Avro 748, Handley Page Herald, Vickers Viscount, Whitworth Gloster Argosy, Vickers Vanguard, DH Comet 4, Vickers VC10 and Super VC10, BAC One- Eleven and DH Trident. They also power seven foreign types—Fairchild F.27, Fokker F.27 Friendship, Grumman Gulfstream, Canadair CL-44, Sud-Aviation Caravelle and Douglas DC-8. Further figures given by the company state that Rolls-Royce turbine engines have flown more than 21m hr in airline service, Ro//s-Royce Conway MkS08 engines in the Boeing 707s of Lufthansa now have an approved overhaul life of 2,000hr, and trials are in progress for 2,3S0hr. Here a flame-tube is being inspected by Prof Lutz right) of the German airworthiness authority, and Max Winterstein, Conway powerplant engineer of Lufthansa, during a recent visit to Derby. Highest Conway overhaul life with any operator is TCA's 2,4O0hr a record approached by no other aero engine manufacturer. Rolls-Royce engines hold world record times between overhauls for turboprop, turbojet and by-pass engines. These overhaul lives are: Dart, up to 3,700hr; Avon, 3,200hr; Conway, 2,400hr. The high export achievement, says the company, "has been made possible by an extensive effort over many years and by a considerable investment of both Government and company money. From its own resources Rolls-Royce has invested £50m in civil turbine engine development. It now has a range of five turbine engines, all of which have been ordered for export." A Three-man Team from Smiths Aviation Division will leave London Airport at Easter to begin a month's tour of airline operators and air force establishments in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Mr E. R. Sisson, technical services manager, leaves first, bound for Tokyo; after discus sions there will travel on to Sydney, where he will join Mr J. S. Rivaz, technical sales manager, and Mr W. H. McKinlay, en gineering manager of the multiplex auto pilot branch of the company's Cheltenham research department. King Aircraft Appointment It is an nounced by H. K. Porter Co (G.B.) Ltd, King Aircraft Division, Cameron Street, Hillington, Glasgow, SW2, that Mr W. Neale has been appointed their technical representative for the aircraft industry in London and the Southern Counties. Auckland Airport Contract Taylor Wood- row (Overseas) Ltd, in association with Wilkins & Davies Construction Co Ltd, of New Zealand, have been awarded a £2.75m contract by the New Zealand Government for the new Auckland Inter national Airport at Mangere, North Island, New Zealand. The contract, gained against considerable US and other inter national competition, calls for the laying of an 8,500ft X 150ft runway, together with taxi tracks.
