534 FLIGHT International, 12 April 1962 WORLD NEWS Princely Flying Time Prince Philip has sent this telegram to Sir Frederick Handley Page: "I am sure you will be delighted to hear that the two Heralds gave excellent service throughout my tour of South America. I flew G-APWA for 99 hours and I enjoyed every one of them. I am only sorry that the one minor mishap should have caused so much comment." One of two Handley Page Heralds used by Prince Philip on his tour of 11 South American countries, G-APW, flew on 34 days over 62 sectors in a total flying time of 126hr 46min and visited 40 airports. Prince Philip flew the aircraft on 49 of these sectors and was aboard for 112hr 58min. G-APW's maximum flying in one day was on April 1, when it covered 2,011 miles in lOhr 28min. Its longest leg was from Lima to La Paz, flown in 4hr 9min, and its short est (from one Lima airport to another) was of Umin duration. Record Time of 3hr 28min from Brookmans Park Beacon, Herts, to Cairo Beacon (ave-age speed of over 560 m.p.h. for more than 2,200 miles) was the performance of the sixth D.H. Comet for United Arab Airlines on April 6. Summer timetables of UAA are based on the new top speed of 525 m.p.h., which means a saving of nearly £250,000 per annum. Seen are Capt Helmig Shams, operations manager and chief pilot of UAA, and Mr John Cunningham, D.H. director and chief test pilot GATCO Joining 1FATCA At the annual general meeting of the Guild of Air Traffic Control Officers, held at the RAF Reserves Club in London last Saturday, it was decided that an application should be made to join the International Federation of Air Traffic Control Associations. This application will be considered at IFATCA's committee meeting in Paris, being held from April 25 to 27. GATCO's membership means an increase in the strength of the federation from 1,600-1,700 members to over 2,000. New Master of the Guild is Mr John MacDonald, a former Master of the London Lodge. Now with the MoA headquarters staff, he was previously Supervisor at London Heathrow. Watching the P.1127 during a Dunsfold demonstration last Thursday by Hawker Aircraft chief test pilot Bill Bedford for Gen Josef Kammhuber, Inspector of the Federal German Air Force (second from left). With him are, left to right, Mr R. L Lickley, deputy managing director, Hawker Aircraft; Sir Sydney Camm, managing director and chief engineer; Air Chief Marshal Sir Thomas Pike, Chief of the Air Staff; and AVM C. H. Hartley, ACAS (Operational Requirements) Mystere 20 Using this designation, Das sault at Bordeaux are reported to be plan ning a rear-engined eight-passenger execu tive jet, slightly larger, heavier and faster than the Vespa Jet and D.H. 125. Power- plant would be two P & W JT-12-A8s developed by Snecma to give a thrust of 3,3001b each. The name seems to imply some use by Dassault of Mystere aerody namics and structure, much as North American used the Sabre. Another poss ibly related design is the Dassault Mediter- rannee with two podded turbojets, which was first publicized some four years ago. Eleventh 504 Dinner A particularly dis tinguished top table helped to make last Friday's eleventh annual reunion dinner of the Avro 504 Club—the last to take place at Londonderry House—another success. Sir Roy Dobson was in the chair, but it was the patron of the club, Sir Thomas Sop- with, who responded to Mr Jimmy Kay's toast to the company. This was the first time Sir Thomas had been able to attend (incidentally, he has never flown in a 504). Major Sippe proposed the guests and Air Cdre Sir Frank Whittle made the principal reply. Mr Fred Miles (who prob ably holds a record, having flown 3,000hr in 504s) followed him. The customary concluding ceremony was the presentation of the 504 Club Trophy to the most successful apprentice of the year, Robert Pottinger.
