Twenty Vickers Vanguards are operated by BEA on domestic and international routes THE UK CARRIERS... Bateson, chief instructor; E. Hustwayte, chief check pilot. Fleet: two Marathon, one Hunting Pembroke, two DHA-3 Drover, one D.H.84 Dragon, three Rapide. three Chipmunks and other light aircraft. Air Safaris Ltd was founded in 1959 to take over the operating division of African Air Safaris Ltd. Inclusive and closed-group tours were undertaken, as well as general charter work. Scheduled services were operated between Hum, Sandown (Isle of Wight), Birmingham, Newcastle and Exeter, between Birmingham, Coventry, Guernsey and Jersey, between Hurn, Dublin and Belfast and between Hum, Ostend and Amsterdam. In November 1960 Air Safaris had acquired Don Everall and the fleet of Falcon Airways, and had mainten ance bases at Hum and Birmingham. The main base was at Oatwick. Airwork International Ltd is a member of the Air Holdings group (see also British United Airways) and was formed early in 1961 by the merger of the Overseas Contracts Division of BUA with the Helicopter Division, which comprised Airwork Helicopters, Bristow Helicopters, Bristow Helicopters (Bermuda) and Bristow Helicopters (Eastern). Airwork International operates over 40 helicopters on oil exploration, contract charter work for oil companies, crop-spraying and agricultural work, passenger flights and training. Fixed- wing aircraft are operated both in support of helicopter activities and as self-contained units for such organizations as the Iraq Petroleum Co, the Sierra Leone Selection Trust Ltd and the Diamond Corporation Sierra Leone Ltd. Autair (Luton) Ltd began DC-3 operations in 1960 and have their main operational and maintenance base at Luton airport. BKS Air Transport Ltd, formed in 1952, is one of the BKS Group of companies founded by Messrs Barnby, Keegan and Stevens, which also includes BKS Engineering Ltd and BKS Air Survey Ltd. BKS Air Transport Ltd is Britain's largest independent domestic airline, operating scheduled services within the British Isles and to Europe; the present company policy is to develop and consolidate its existing route net work. Seasonal services are to be operated this summer to Bilbao, Ostend, Basle, Guernsey and Jersey from Newcastle, Leeds/Bradford and London, and a novel "Book Now— Schedule Later" scheme has been evolved for services to Guernsey and Jersey. All-the-year-round scheduled services arc currently operated from Newcastle and Leeds/Bradford to London, Belfast and Dublin. A seasonal vehicle ferry service is operated between Liverpool and Dublin, as well as regular news paper flights. Much charter and IT work is done, and a new development is the air freighting of racehorses and brood mares between this country and Ireland. Inclusive tour flights will be operated this summer to Portugal, Spain, Yugoslavia, Palma and Italy. BKS Engineering Ltd has bases at Southend, Leeds/Bradford and Newcastle, and under takes contract maintenance, overhauls, re pairs and modifications. BKS Air Survey Ltd are photogrammetric engineers and geo-E hysical surveyors who work for more than alf the county surveyors in Britain. Extensive motorway work is at present in hand. Black Isle Air Services is a new Scottish independent formed in 1961 that applied to the ATLB to operate a number of services radiating from Inverness to Glasgow, Edin burgh, Prestwick, Kirkwall, Lerwick, Ben-becula and Stornoway. These applications have now been withdrawn, but Black Isle will continue to operate charter services. The company has leased aircraft from Capital Services (Aero) Ltd of Renfrew in recent months. Bournemouth Air Taxi Ltd was registered on November 8, 1961 and has applied to the ATLB to operate a scheduled service between Bournemouth and Sandown using a Rapide. British United Airways Formed in July 1960 by the amalgamation of the Airwork 546 FLIGHT International, 12 April 1962 Group of companies and Hunting-Clan, British United includes Airwork, Air Charter, Hunting-Clan, Morton Air Services, Olley Air Service and Transair. Late in 1961, British United's shareholders formed a new holding company, Air Holdings Ltd., which now owns its share capital and also that of its former subsidiaries. In early 1962 the share holders of British Aviation Services also ac quired an interest in Air Holdings, thus bringing their chief subsidiary, Silver City Airways, into the Group. British United's principal associated companies, all subsidiaries of Air Holdings, are thus now Airwork Inter national, Airwork Services, Aviation Traders (Engineering), Channel Air Bridge, Dishley Engineering, Morton Air Services (which continues to retain its identity), Silver City Airways and Straits Air Freight Express which flies cargo across the Cook Straits between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Associated companies of which Air Holdings is not the majority shareholder are Commercial Air Services of Johannesburg and United Air Carriers of Salisbury, Rhodesia. British United operates scheduled passen ger services to East, West and Central Africa (the Safari services); to the Canary Islands, Gibraltar, Malaga, Rotterdam and the Chan nel Islands. It operates the only scheduled all-freight services between Europe and Africa (Africargo). It also runs regular con tract services carrying Service personnel and their families to four points in Germany and to Hong Kong, Singapore, Aden, Nairobi and Cyprus; inclusive-tour services to nu merous European and other destinations and extensive freight operations. It acts as technical adviser to Sudan Airways and operates its Blue Nile Viscount services between Khar toum and London; manages Sierra Leone Airways and operates its internal and inter national services. Caledonian Airways (Prestwick) Ltd was incorporated in April 1961 to undertake charter work especially IT and group charters. It started operations with a flight from Gatwick to Barbados on November 29, and has also flown charters to Lourenco Marques and New York. Mr Max Wilson, chairman of the Overseas Visitors' Club, recently acquired a majority shareholding in Caledonian, which would have operated charter flights to Johan nesburg under the name of Rooibok Air Charters (Pty) Ltd if South African permission had been given. DC-7Cs are leased from Sabena, a second, replacing one lost in March, is due to be delivered in April 1962 and Sabena maintains the aircraft. IT flights to European resorts will be made this season.
