FLIGHT International, 12 April 1962 Pakistan on April 1, 1955, when P1A took over Orient Airways. As a company PIA had been "ounded in 1951 and its first actual operations were between East and West Pakistan in June 1954. A service to London was begun in early 1955. The corporation is responsible for the operation of all services within Pakistan and regional services to Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta and Rangoon. A four times-weekly service between Karachi and London is operated via Tehran, Beirut, Rome, Geneva and Frankfurt by a Boeing 707-320 Intercontinental leased from PanAm and a Boeing 720B recently purchased. Papuan Air Transport Ltd—Patair was founded in 1952 and operates non-scheduled and charter services from Port Moresby. Head Office: Port Moresby, New Guinea. Fleet: one DC-3, two Piaggio P.166, two Anson, one Fox Moth. Paraense, Transportes Aereos SA was founded in 1957 and started a scheduled service between Belem, Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro, Pedro Afonso, Rio Branco, Porto Velho, Cristalandia, Cuiaba, Goiana, Campo Grande and Sao Paulo are also served. Head Office: Belem, Brazil. Executives: A. Ramos, president; F. de Barros, director. Fleet: three C-46. Paraguayan Airways Service. Little is known about this company except that it operated a Douglas DC-4 and a Curtiss C-46. It is now believed to be inactive. Paramount Airlines Inc, until recently known as Paul Mantz Air Services, is a US non- scheduled and supplemental carrier awarded a two-year operating certificate in January 1959. Head Office: Lockheed Air Terminal, Burbank, California. Executive: T. J. Bodwell, president. Employees: 100. Fleet: two DC-7C, two Constellation. Paul Mantz Air Services—see Paramount Airlines Inc. Parsons Airways Ltd operate charter services, mostly in Ontario and Manitoba. Head Office: PO Box 120, Kenora, Ontario. Executives: H. J. Parsons, president; W. K. Parsons, secretary-treasurer. Employees: 9. Fleet: two Norseman, two Cessna 180, one Super Cub, one Cub, one Super Cruiser. Pegasus Airlifts was last year awarded a Canadian Air Transport Board licence to operate helicopter services between Toronto's Malton Airport and downtown Toronto, starting on January 1. A dozen trips a day were planned. It is not known what equip ment is used. Head Office: Toronto, Canada. Persian Air Services commenced operations in 1955 with Yorks, technical assistance being provided initially by Skyways. More recently Sabena provided technical assistance and equipment, and the emphasis of PAS's opera tions shifted from freighting to passenger carrying, services being operated from Teheran to Brussels and London via Geneva and Paris with Boeing 707s and DC-7Cs [eased from Sabena. The agreement with oaoena was terminated at the end of December, 1961 and a once-weekly Teheran - Amsterdam service via Istanbul, Geneva and Paris was operated by KLM for PAS with an Electra. ihis service started on January 10, but PAS 575 ceased operations on March 1, 1962, and is apparently being wound up prior to the formation, sponsored by the Iranian Govern ment, of United Iranian Airways, in which PAS will have a 20 per cent holding. This new carrier is being formed by the merger of PAS and Iranair. PAS also operated a twice-weekly Teheran-Beirut service before it ceased operations. Pharazyn Air Charters, registered in 1955, operates charter and taxi services, especially between Nairobi and Kitale, a centre for European settlers in the Kenya Highlands. Head Office: Kitale, Kenya. Executive: D. L. C. Pharazyn. Fleet: one Bonanza, one Pacer. Phillipine Air Lines Inc—PAL began in 1932 as the Phillipine Aerial Taxi Co. The company was reorganized and took its present name in 1941. Following the war the company developed its operations, and in 1947 and 1948 PAL took over two other Phillipine concerns— Far Eastern Air Transport and Commercial Air Lines. Long distance overseas services were inaugurated to Europe and across the Pacific to the USA, but in 1954 PAL suspended these services and now operates only within the Phillipine Republic and to Hong Kong. Services to the USA will be resumed with DC-8s; PAL planned to start jet services on February 1, 1962, between Manila and Hono lulu using a Boeing 707 leased from PanAm. On domestic routes, Viscounts and Friendships operate de luxe services and DC-3s fly first- class and economy flights. PAL was again reorganized in 1961 when the Phillipine Government sold its majority interest in the company. Head Office: Makati Building, Ayala Avenue, Makati Rizel, Manila. Executives: Col Renato L. Piedmont Aviation Inc was established in 1940 as a fixed base operator and began local service operations in 1948. Trading as Pied mont Airlines the company now has about 3,290 miles of routes in North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and the District of Columbia. Ex-TWA Martin 4-0-4s have recently been acquired. Head Office: Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA. Executives: T. H. Davis, president and treasurer; H. K. Saunders, vice-president; R. S. Fleet: eight Fairchild F-27, 17 Martin 4-0-4, four DC-3. Pioneer Aviation Corp was founded in 1953 and operates non-scheduled services within Indonesia. No recent news of this carrier is available. Head Office: Djakarta, Indonesia. Fleet: one Beaver, one Cessna. Pittsburgh Airways is a new US helicopter operator that started a shuttle service on February 1 between a downtown heliport, Pittsburgh Airport and Allegheny County Airport. The airline is a subsidiary of 'Copter Skyways. Head Office: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Fleet: two Sikorsky S-55. PLUNA—Primeras Lineas Uruguayas de Navegacion Aerea began operations as a private company in 1936 but in 1943 it was reorgan ized, with the Government taking a 49 per cent interest. The Government share later rose to 83 per cent and subsequently 94 per cent. PLUNA became completely Govern ment-owned in 1951 and now operates domestic services and routes to the Argentine, Brazil and Paraguay. Sikorsky S-62 of San Francisco-Oakland Heli copter Airlines Head Office: Montevideo, Uruguay. Executives: S. O. Landoni, president; R. Langon, general manager; J. Oliver, under general manager; D. E. Polynesian Airlines Ltd is a Samoa-based carrier that commenced operations in 1959. Up to thirteen flights a week are operated between Apia (Western Samoa), which is under New Zealand mandate, and Pago Pago (US Samoa) using two ex-Tanganyika Govern ment Percival Princes. Certain of Polynesian's flights connect with PanAm services through Pago Pago. Head Office: Burns Philp Buildings, Apia, Western Samoa. Fleet: one Prince 6E, one Prince 4E. President Airlines is a US supplemental carrier that began operations in 1961 with two ex- American Airlines DC-6Bs and a DC-7C leased or bought from Northwest Orient. Mr Glenn H. Taylor, who took over control of President last September from Mr Fred Wilson, has announced that the company plans to convert some of the 34 ex-PanAm and Northwest Stratocruisers it has purchased to feature swing-tail loading and turboprop engines. Executive: Glenn H. Taylor, president. Fleet: one DC-7C, one DC-6B. Primera Linea Aerea Santefesina SA—PLAS was formed in 1958 and operates between Buenos Aires and Santa Fe. Head Office: Santa Fe, Argentina. Fleet: one DC-3, three L.10. Protea Airways (formerly Volkslugdiens) was formed in 1958 as an associate of Trek Air ways to operate charter flights. Non-scheduled services are operated within Africa and to the Middle East. Head Office: Mobil House, 87 Rissik Street, Tohannesburg, South Africa. Executives: Capt T. Meredith, Capt C. H. Snelgar, W. Provincetown-Boston Airline Inc operates feeder services between Provincetown Muni cipal Airport and Logan Airport, Boston. This carrier provides equipment for Naples Air lines Inc, an affiliate.
