English Electric Lightning FAW.Is of Treble-One Sqn over Lowestoft. The squadron does not at present have an aerobatic commitment and this formation, led by the CO, Sqn Ldr K. A. C. Wirdnam, was posed for "Flight International" photographer Ian Macdonald. The other three pilots were Fg Off M. Bridge (No 2), Fit Lt D. G. Lucas (No 3) and Fg Off A. Garside (box). The aircraft are carrying drill Firestreaks NEW co of Nottingham UAS is Sqn Ldr D. R. Atkinson. He succeeds Sqn Ldr H. S. Horth, who has taken up an appoint ment at Flying Training Command head quarters. ROYAL AIR FORCE SHACKLETONS recently took part in a search for two members of an oil company and a lorry missing near the Tazebo oasis, 300 miles south of Benghazi, Libya. NINETY-SIX CRANWELL CADETS are spending four days at the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, during a ten- day Easter vacation visit to the US. Accompanied by the Commandant, Air Cdre E. D. McK. Nelson, and 12 officers, they flew to the States by Britannia of RAF Transport Command. A SERVICE OF COMMEMORATION was held by RAFA members at the Air Forces' Memorial on Victoria Embankment, London, on April 1 to mark the formation of the RAF on that date in 1918 and the 50th anniver sary of the formation of the RFC. The salute was taken by Marshal of the RAF Lord Tedder, president of the RAFA, who was accompanied by the CAS, Air Chief Marshal Sir Thomas Pike. THE RAF BENEVOLENT FUND recently received £3,932, the Royal Air Force share of pro ceeds from last year's Royal Tournament. AS AN INITIATIVE TEST, seven aircrew cadets from No 1 Initial Training School, South Cerney, Glos, have been making a 300- mile canoe trip down the Rhine. They set off last Saturday. FLYING CLOTHING EQUIPMENT TESTS under cold-weather conditions are being carried out 4,000ft up in the Bavarian Alps, at Bad Kohlgrub, where RAF Germany are holding their winter survival school. Forty- three items are being tested and will subse quently be subjected to airborne utilization. Reports on their effectiveness are required by May 1. A NEW TORTOISE MASCOT has been acquired by 20 Sqn, now operational at Tengah with Hunter FGA.9s. Presented to the squadron by SAC Lum of Singapore, he is named Frederic du Crosses after his illustrious predecessor Elbert du Crosses, who served with 20 Sqn in Germany. Frederic, who is being commissioned as a pilot officer, was checked out in a Hunter T.7 and given a conversion trip in an FGA.9. THE RAAF BASE AT CANBERRA is to be named Fairbairn, commemorating the name of a former Minister for Air who was killed in an air accident at Canberra in 1940. A 200-TON FOOD DROP over Tanganyika was completed by the RAF during the March 30-April 1 weekend. Carried out by Beverleys of 30 Sqn,with RASC despatchers, it included the dropping of about 20,0001b of maize to relieve an area south of Dar-es- Salaam. SACW A.
