Wykeham CAS Promoted ON THE EVE OF HIS DEPARTURE On a World tOUr (this page, last week) the Chief of Air Staff, Sir Thomas Pike, was promoted to Marshal of the Royal Air Force. This promotion dated from April 6 and the CAS left for Toronto by Comet of Transport Command on April 11. Travelling with the CAS, in addition to his staff, are two RAF cadets, three apprentices and one boy entrant. New Wessex Unit NOW EQUIPPED with Westland Wessex heli copters, 845 Sqn was recommissioned at RNAS Culdrose on April 10. The squadron is to embark in HMS Albion, the new Commando carrier, in the autumn. SERVICE AVIATION Air Force, Naval and Army Flying News BIGGEST TRANSMITTING STATION in the RAF —a new £5m project at Hiswa, Aden— became operational recently after an official opening by Mr Harold Watkinson, Min ister of Defence. THE SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL REUNION of the Headquarters Bomber Command Associa tion of Officers is being held at Bomber Command HQ, RAF High Wycombe, Bucks, on Saturday, May 26. Any members who have not yet received details of this reunion may obtain them by applying to the honorary secretary at the address given. AN ATC ANNIVERSARY RALLY—the COrps celebrates its 21st anniversary this year— is being held at RAF White Waltham, Berks, on July 21. At the station, where HQ Air Cadets is located, about 400 members are to take part in demonstrations. These will include flying in Chipmunks, gliding, motor cycling, drill and gymnastics. Contingents from the US and Canada and several European countries are expected to take part. EXERCISES WITH THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY Were recently carried out by 42 Commando and 848 Sqn, embarked in HMS Bulwark. In the first exercise, "Tombstone Territory," a landing by the Commando in the Cer vantes Island area—off the Western Aus tralia coast, north of Perth—was opposed by the Australian Special Air Service. The ship's company also paid a visit to Fre- mantle. NEW HEADQUARTERS for No 2 Group, Royal Observer Corps, were opened at Horsham, Sussex, on April 7 by the Duke of Norfolk. This is the nineteenth of 31 new HQs being built for the ROC since the Corps was given responsibility for plotting nuclear fill-out in the event of war. It wis stated at the opening ceremony that within a year, warning of rocket attack would be given within 20sec of the rockets being launched. RCAF CF-101B Squadrons FIVE CF-IOIB SQUADRONS are soon to be operational in Air Defence Command of the Royal Canadian Air Force. They will be based at Comox, Vancouver Is (409 "Night Hawk" Sqn); Chatham, NB; Bagotville, PQ; Uplands, near Ottawa; and Noith Bay, Ont. 46's Forty-fifth THE FORTY-FIFTH OFFICERS' REUNION DINNER of 46 Sqn is being held at the Park Lane Hotel, London Wl, on June 2, with the traditional ladies' luncheon there the following day. Further details of these events may be obtained from Sqn Ldr Peter Gifkins, whose present address is RCAF Station St Hubert, PQ, Canada. To mark the significance of next year's reunion—the forty-sixth—it is hoped to have all former COs of the squadron attending and Sqn Ldr Gifkins would welcome news of them. RAAF ASR Unit IN CANBERRA the Australian Minister for Air, Mr Leslie Bury, announced recently that the RAAF's new search and rescue squadron, No 9, is to be formed at Williamtown, NSW, on June 11. It will have eight Bell 204B helicopters. The first two of these aircraft are being flown from the company's Fort Worth, Texas, plant to Australia in September by RAAF Hercules and the remainder will be airlifted later in 1962. Crews are already training in the US and the squadron is expected to be operational by February 1963. HMS "Centaur" in Aden for Aden Forces Week when some of her aircraft—Gannet AEW.3s and Sea Vixens can be seen on her flight deck—took part in a flying display.
