FLIGHT International, 26 April 1962 655 Hobson constant-speed alternator drive for DH Trident both yaw and roll; an air accident recorder, which registers, on virtually indestructible wire, all the essential details—height, airspeed, temperature, etc—which would be of vital interest in the event of a crash; total head thermometer, originally developed by the Air Ministry. A true-temperature device with a venturi intake which renders the instrument insensitive to local flow direc tion; an Avro optical shaft encoder, developed for the provision of the sine and cosine of input angle to an accuracy of eleven binary digits plus sign; and a printed circuit switch—the new PCS.1/10/M switch, designed to provide an efficient rotary switch action in applications where long life is essential. The company will also exhibit a variety of fuel, hydraulic and pneumatic valves; fuelling couplings for normal fuels and for HTP; rotary and rectilinear potentiometers; and Avro strain gauges. The de Havilland Aircraft Co Ltd will show an 801b cold-air unit of turbofan type, with axial-flow turbine and radial flow fan, as used on the de Havilland Comet, offering a servicing period of l,000hr, with an overhaul life of 5,000hr.; 451b cold air unit, similar to the Comet unit in design; and an ac motor-driven oil- free reciprocating compressor. This last item is a refrigeration compressor in which oil-separation problems are eliminated by the use of sealed bearings charged with a lubricant, and by the employ ment of low-friction materials for the rubbing surfaces. De Havil land will also show a representative range of control valves for airborne cooling equipment, including valves from the air condi tioning systems of the de Havilland Trident and Short Belfast. H, M. Hobson Ltd On the Hobson stand will be a tandem piston jack, Type 194, as fitted on the D.H. Sea Vixen; a feel simulator unit, Type 385, for the Vickers-Armstrongs VC10; a camber flap control, Type 437, for the Slid-Aviation Caravelle; a flap control unit, Type 407, designed for power actuation of the wing flaps on the A.W. Argosy; a feel simulator control, Type 205, which affords the pilot artificial stick feel in aircraft equipped with power- operated control surfaces; feel simulator units, Control Type 438 and Jack Type 439, for applying artificial feel to the pilot's elevator and rudder controls on the Caravelle; feel simulator control, Type 293, which affords the pilot an artificial stick feel in aircraft equipped with power-operated control surfaces; feel simulator jack, Type 294; feel simulator jack, Type 192; powered flying control, Type 157, for the ailerons of the D.H. Sea Vixen; powered flying controls, Type 190 and Type 145; ball-type screw jack, Type 378; and fuel-flow proportioned, Type 333 and Type 440, the latter being for the D.H. Trident. Other Hobson exhibits will be a constant-speed alternator drive, Type 403; a ramjet air/fuel ratio control, Type 176; tank mounted fuel booster pump and canister, Pump Type 436 and Canister Type 443; and electro-hydraulic actuators, Type 214 and Type 262. There will also be a carburetter, Type A.I.55-J. The list of Hobson items is completed by the following: cockpit engine control, Type 373 Mkl; flow control unit, Type 212; acceleration control unit, Type 211; twin flap control. Type 377; droop control, Type 392; motor-pump units, Type 293, Type 216, >.-::.:..;: ^,.L V;. v ~::;: ;,,..•'* • By-pass duct for Rolls-Royce Conway and Avon inlet de-icing manifold made in IMI titanium Lucas air turbine pump and Type 215; power-pack, Type 275; motor-pump unit, Type 426; hydraulic pumps, Type 181 and Type 180; hydraulic motors, Type 197 and Type 199; constant-pressure pump, Type Y.384; hand pump, Type 228; constant-pressure pump, Type 240, and "Everac" hydrostatic chuck. Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd ICI is represented by two sub sidiary companies, Marston Excelsior Ltd and Imperial Metal Industries (Kynoch) Ltd. Marston Excelsior supply components of many kinds to the aircraft industry. Their products are incorporated in most British civil and military aircraft, and in many foreign types, including the Caravelle, Friendship and Draken. Among the products featured at the exhibition are flexible fuel tanks, which can be used for fuels, oils, drinking water, insecticides and waste products; and Portolite tanks for bulk storage of fuels on airstrips and for air transport of non-dangerous liquids. Marstons specialize in heat exchangers for all aircraft duties, and several will be dis played including fuel heaters, oil coolers, and semi-conductor coolers. Other products on show will be components made from laminated plastics, radomes (including a recently developed de-icing radome) and titanium rings. Imperial Metal Industries (Kynoch) Ltd is the principal manu facturer of semi-fabricated titanium in Great Britain, and is dis playing both wrought titanium and fabricated components. Among the wrought titanium products being featured are titanium tube, sheet and extrusions. Fabricated components include wing spar brackets, compressor discs and blades, and forgings. Intensive
