FLIGHT International, 26 April 1962 657 Rolls-Royce Ltd This company is exhibiting at Hanover in association with MAN Turbomotoren GmbH. In 1960 Rolls- Royce signed a technical co-operation agreement with the German company covering the joint development of light turbine engines. The two companies are also associated as members of the inter national group of companies which will produce Rolls-Royce Tyne turboprops to power the Transall C-160 and Breguet Atlantic. A full-scale Tyne will be exhibited. The Tyne RTy.20 of 5,855 e.h.p. for the Transall C-160 and Breguet Atlantic will be pro duced by a group of companies comprising Rolls-Royce, MAN Turbomotoren, Hispano-Suiza (France) and F.N. (Belgium). Civil Tynes are in service with five international airlines on routes in Europe and North America and across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A range of full-scale engines and model exhibits will survey Rolls-Royce achievement in the development of engines for STOL and VTOL aircraft. The company pioneered work in this field and can now offer a wide range of jet-lift, propulsion and boost engines for all types of VTOL and STOL aircraft. Rolls-Royce engines have been chosen for new European VTOL aircraft. Models will illustrate types of aircraft which can be designed with Rolls-Royce jet-lift and propulsion engines. Other models will show how thrust deflection techniques can be applied to propulsion engines to provide additional jet lift. Two types of engine will be exhibited full scale. They are the RB.108 jet-lift engine and the RB.145 lightweight turbojet. The RB.108 has a thrust/weight ratio of more than 8:1 and delivers a thrust of 2,2001b with 11 per cent air bleed for aircraft stabiliza tion. The Short SC.l VTOL research aircraft is powered by five RB.108s, four providing lift and one for propulsion. The RB.145 is a lightweight turbojet providing a thrust of 2,7501b and can be used to provide jet lift, propulsive thrust or both. A full-scale Spey by-pass turbojet rated at 10,0001b take-off thrust will be shown. This new engine has been designed to give out standing economy. It powers the de Havilland Trident airliner and has been ordered for the BAC One-Eleven and the Blackburn Buccaneer. Three piston engines for light aircraft will be displayed. Rolls- Royce are building engines of this type under licence from the Continental Motors Corporation. Types to be exhibited are: O-200-A, a four-cylinder unit with a take-off power of 100 b.h.p.; O-300-C, six-cylinder, take-off power 145 b.h.p.; GI0-470-AG, six-cylinder, with fuel injection and propeller reduction gear, take-off power 310 b.h.p. A quarter-scale model will show the installation of the two Rolls- Royce RZ.2 liquid oxygen/kerosine rocket engines which power the de Havilland Blue Streak, first stage of the proposed European three-stage satellite launch vehicle. Each RZ.2 gives a sea-level thrust of 137,0001b. Rotax Ltd In addition to electrical systems for aircraft, starting systems for aircraft engines, and other established products manu factured by Rotax, particular emphasis will be placed on the equip ment mentioned below. Under terms of a licence agreement with the Avco Corporation of America, Rotax are producing the Lycoming mechanical constant-speed drives for use in British and European aircraft. The acquisition of this licence enables Rotax to offer complete constant-frequency a.c. systems of 400c/s utilizing their wide range of alternators of conventional, rotating-rectifier and solid-rotor types. The latter machines, capable of operating under very high ambient conditions, are particularly suitable for high-speed aircraft. Rotax solid rotor alternators range from 3.5 kVA to 55 kVA; design features include a stationary excitation system eliminating the need for brushes, slip-rings and rotating windings. Transistorized control and protection units on show are claimed to effect a big saving in size and weight compared with other equipment and are designed for Rotax electrical systems. Additionally there are Rotax-Baldwin shaft angle digital encoders as used on all the major missile radar projects in the USA. Rotax have an arrangement with the Baldwin Piano Company to manufac ture a range of encoders suitable for British and foreign markets. A range of low-pressure air starters has been developed for use in high-temperature starter systems for gas turbines. The CT.1013 starter is used for starting the Rolls-Royce Spey engines in the Trident. Design features include self-contained oil lubrication; self- contained engine-to-starter disengaging device; overriding engine- to-starter disengaging device; centrifugally operated automatic cut-off; the starter will "fail safe" under all known operating extremes and conditions, thus ensuring that it can also be used on cross bleed; high power-to-weight ratio; non-toxic exhaust. Finally there is a range of valves designed for operation in turbine compressor bleed systems. Their function is to provide on/off control of the airflow and to give a regulated output pressure when the input pressure exceeds a predetermined value. Other applica tions for these valves include de-icing, emergency generators and nozzle actuators. Royston Instruments Ltd This company will show its V.G.H. data recorder, which records eight flight parameters, six continu ously and two time-multiplexed. Transistorized circuits are used throughout, and by constructing the circuits in modular form and then encapsulating each circuit in silicone rubber the complete recorder, which operates within an ambient temperature range of —55°C to +70°C, can withstand a 20g shock acceleration in any direction. A concentric spool arrangement, accommodating 900ft of tape, is driven by a crystal controlled motor at a tape speed of O.lin/sec. At this tape speed, a frequency response of up to lOc/s is possible and the total recording time is 30hr. Another data recorder will be the MU/7, one of the latest addi tions to the Midas range. This is a general purpose recorder, designed primarily for wide operational flexibility. To achieve this result, the mechanical and electrical sub-units controlling the tape speed, signal bandwidth, input circuitry and power supplies have been designed so that they can be independently changed to meet Royston VGH data recorder.
