764 FLIGHT International, 17 May 1962 WORLD E W S R-R for Dassault An announcement by Rolls-Royce Ltd on May 11 stated: "Rolls-Royce jet-lift engines have been ordered to power the Dassault Balzac and Mirage IIIV. The Balzac research aircraft is now being built; it will be fol lowed by the Mirage IIIV, which is a VTOL aircraft based on the well-known Mirage IH family of fighter, reconnaissance and attack aircraft . . . Both the Balzac and the Mirage IIIV will have Rolls-Royce jet-lift engines. For the Balzac they will be RB.108s, and for the HIV they will be RB.162s. Dassault state that the Mirage IIIV will be ready to go into operational service before any other known project of this type, and that it seems to be the most satisfactory answer to the NATO BMR.3 requirement for a VTOL fighter and recon naissance aircraft. The IIIV has already been chosen for development by the French Air Force. "Dassault and the British Aircraft Corporation have an agreement covering a joint sales programme and the licenced production of the Mirage IIIV in Britain. The agreement covers the granting of a licence for BAC to produce the IIIV for the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. Design and development work under the agreement will be done by BAC at Warton, Lancashire. Dassault also has co-opera tion agreements with Sud-Aviation and with the Boeing Company covering the Mirage niV. The aircraft has been jointly submitted in the NATO competition by all four companies." Chairman of Beagle Aircraft Ltd is Mr M. A. H. Bellhouse, who remains chairman of British Executive and General Aviation and deputy chairman of the Pressed Steel Co, of which the Beagle Group is a subsidiary. The two deputy chairmen are Mr Peter Masefield (who continues as the Group's managing director) and Mr J. R. Edwards, managing director of Pressed Steel. At the same time, Mr F. G. Miles has been appointed to the board of British Executive and General Aviation. The resignations have been accepted of Sir Mark Norman, formerly commercial direc tor, and Wg Cdr Tim Vigors, formerly sales director. Boeing / Hunting Agreement An agree ment was signed on May 8 between The Boeing Company, Seattle, and the Hunting Group, of London, to form a sales organi zation directed by the Hunting Group. Known as Applied Technology Co Ltd, it is to act as agents and advisers for Boeing Associated Products in Britain on the selling and licensing of technical by-pro ducts of the Boeing Company. "This agreement [say the two firms] marks a trend of the highest significance. Organizations as big and as technically advanced as Boeing inevitably develop by products which are not limited to the fields in which the company has a direct interest. These products frequently have great importance and potentiality in other spheres. What, in other words, may be a by-product to Boeing, may be a product or process, or 'know-how' of direct importance, to another company in another industry. It is for this reason that Boeing Associated Products was organized, and it is for this reason that Applied Technology Co has been formed in Britain to act on its behalf. "Applied Technology will offer 12 pro ducts to the British market. Typical is Boelite, a plastic and fabric wall panel first developed for the 707 jet liners. Another is a micro-thickness gauge, a device which measures the depth of metal films, such as gold plating on printed cir cuits, with the backscatter of radiation. Also typical is Slipcote, a process for PTFE coating capable of very wide application. "The choice of Hunting as the Boeing partner is because of the capacity of Hunt ing's Light Engineering Group, which has an existing technical sales and distributing team of negotiators, to provide the initial impetus to the new company. One of these Light Engineering Group companies, Field- Tech Ltd, itself already acts for such world wide American companies as Bendix and Leach." Royal Aero Club Changes The Royal Aero Club has announced that Mr R. A. S. Ames has taken over the duties of aviation secretary from Mr A. S. C. Lumsden, who has resigned, and that Mr Douglas Wiggins has been appointed deputy secretary- general. The latter post is a newly established one. RAeS President Last Thursday, May 10, Mr B. S. Shenstone, MASC, FRACS, FIAS, FCAI, a director and chief engineer of British European Airways, took office as president of the Royal Aeronautical Society for 1962-63. The retiring president, Air Marshal Sir Owen Jones, KBE, CB, AFC, BA, DIC, FRAes, MiMechE, presided at the annual general meeting, and presented a number of the Society's 1961 awards. Beagle-Miles Aircraft at Shoreham and the aircraft work of Beagle-Auster Aircraft at Rearsby have been amalgamated under the one heading of Beagle Aircraft Ltd. This company will be the operating and trading subsidiary of British Executive and General Aviation Ltd."
