Mig-21s for India? While the home-grown HF-24 is still without a production power- plant, the Indian Air Force is unofficially said to be "very interested" in the Russian Mig-21. A delegation has been holding talks in the Soviet Union, and reports suggest that the supersonic fighter/bomber will be both purchased and, later, built under licence. Germany and the P.1127 A Bonn report last week, quoting a Defence Ministry spokesman, said that West Germany plans to buy three Hawker P.1127 VTOL strike/ reconnaissance aircraft "for experimental purposes." The plan, it was said, also provided for further development of the aircraft as a light fighter/bomber. The purchase would be made from funds ear marked for arms purchases from Britain under the Anglo-German financial agree ment reached earlier this year. Commenting last week on P. 1127 develop ments, Flight International recalled that last year an intergovernmental agreement was reached between the United Kingdom and West Germany for the mutual develop ment of the P.1127 by both countries. "It is not yet clear," we said, "what con tribution the German Government or industry will make to the programme, but this bilateral agreement remains active." Sud's Helicopter Success Recent orders have brought the number of Alouette 2s sold by Sud Aviation to 800, with 33 countries using the company's helicopters. In all, Sud-Aviation have delivered a total of 942 helicopters, including 20 Alouette 3s and 158 S-58s. India has now joined Sweden and the USA as Alouette licensees. Fokker Profits A gross profit of Fl 4.3m (£422,000) for last year, compared with F13.1m (£304,000) for 1960, has been announced by Fokker Aircraft. Net pro fit was Fl 1,271,250 (£125,000). The Star- fighter project failed to contribute to Fokker results in 1961 but sales of the F.27 Friend ship were successful. Earl Mountbatten of Burma, Chief of the Defence Staff, visited Vickers-Armstrongs' Weybridge works last week to see progress with the TSR.2 and VCI0.
