FLIGHT International, 783 7 May 1962 RAF 1962 FIGHTER COMMAND ALERTING AND DEFENDING V-force bases and overall de fence of the United Kingdom are the main tasks of Fighter Com mand, which is part of a unified system of European air defence under NATO's Supreme Allied Commander. For these tasks the Command is equipped with Lightnings, Javelins and Hunters and a force of Bloodhound air defence missiles such as are de picted in the drawings overleaf. Backing the Command is a control and reporting organiza tion closely linked with other European air defence regions; this will be integrated with the ballistic missile early warning system.
