794 Canberra of the RAAF, which works closely with the RAF in the Far East, taking off from Butterworth -&;&* * FAR EAST AIR FORCE FEAF Sycamore, based at Butterworth for rescue duties FLIGHT International 17 May 1%2 PRIMARY ROLE of the RAF in the Far East, in conjunction with the Royal Navy and the Army, is to assist members of the Commonwealth and their allies to maintain peace and security and to implement the British policy of supporting SEATO. The Command has bases on Singapore Island (Char gi, Seletar and Tengah), at Hong Kong and on Gan Island; it operates units in Malaya at the request of the Malayan Government. Though the 12- year Malayan emergency ended in 1960, some air supply is still being provided to support limited policing operations, mainly in Northern Malaya border areas. Aircraft operated include Jave lins, Canberras, Beverleys, Has tings, Twin Pioneers, Valettas and Sycamores; they are being reinforced this year by Hunters and Belvederes.
