Naval Aircraft Directorship A NEW DIRECTOR-GENERAL, AIRCRAFT, has been appointed by the Admiralty, Capt D. A. Williams, DSC, RN, taking over in July with the acting rank of rear admiral from Rear Admiral E. Mill, CB, OBE, who is due to retire on relief. Capt Williams is at present Chief Staff Officer (Technical) and Command Engineer Officer, Plymouth. He previously commanded RNAS Abbots- inch. During the war he served in the air craft carrier Implacable as engineer officer. Man of Vision A BIG BIOGRAPHY for a big man: so one might sum up (writes "H.W.") Andrew Boyle's 734-page book on the late Marshal of the RAF Lord Trenchard,* which appears so appropriately in this year of golden jubilee commemorations. In 1912, when he was almost 40, Trenchard learned to fly and joined the new Royal Flying Corps; he had already served in South Africa, where he lost a lung, and in Nigeria, where he won the DSO; he might have settled down to an invalid existence, resting on his military laurels. Yet the greatest achievements of his life lay ahead: command of the RFC, * "Trenchard." Collins, St James's Place, Lon don. Illustrated. 45s net. Air Marshal Sir Paterson Fraser, KB£, CE>, AFC, who is to be Inspector-General of the RAF from June I. A South African, he was a pre- war RAF test pilot and after the war com manded the A&AEE. He is currently UK member of the CENTO Permanent Military Deputies Croup first Chief of the Air Staff, founder and sustainer of the independent Royal Air Force, Metropolitan Police Commissioner; and when he died in 1956, six marshals of the RAF carried him to his tomb in West minster Abbey's Battle of Britain chapel. What was the secret of Trenchard's personality? Boyle calls him a "man of vision"; certainly he saw much farther and more clearly than most other men. He was determined and courageous, an epi tome of the strong, silent man. Rarely do we come close to him, even in this meticulous biography. The real Trenchard, as distinct from the public figure, still eludes us; but our admiration for his achievements—in which there was no hint of ambition; he cared nothing for worldly prizes—is perhaps stronger than ever for being better- informed. Scone Contest GLASGOW UAS regained the Scone Trophy in the Scottish university air squadrons' annual competition at Scone Aerodrome recently, scoring 91.7 points, and now go forward for the Hack Trophy. Edinburgh was second with 83.6; St Andrews scored 77 and Aberdeen 72.8. CFS Aerobatic Team THERE ARE TWO CHANGES in the RAF Central Flying School aerobatic team for this year"? displays. It is to have five aircraft instead of four and these will remain together throughout the repertoire; and the more powerful Jet Provost T.4 aircraft are being flown, with 2,5001b-thrust Bristol Siddeley Vipers, 7501b more powerful than the engines in the T.3s. Team leader is Fit Lt Ian K. McKee, who was a reserve pilot last year. Formation aerobatic leaders: Sqn Ldr P. G. Botteritl (left, below), CO of 74 Sqn, which provides this season's Fighter Command aero batic team; and Fit Lt I. K. McKee, who leads the CFS team (see news-item above)
