Antarctic Helicopter Honour THE TWO RN WHIRLWINDS aboard the Royal Navy's ice patrol ship HMS Protector during her 1960-61 Antarctic commission have been awarded the Boyd Trophy for 1961. Given annually for the finest feat of Naval aviation, this was presented on the ship at Portsmouth on Wednesday of last week. During the period for which the award was made the helicopter flight aboard Protector was commanded by Lt D. S. Springall, RN. The Flag Officer Air, Home, Vice- Admiral D. P. Dreyer, commented in making the award that all members of the flight showed great enthusiasm and deter mination in their duties. He added: "In consistently adverse flying conditions where high winds, freezing temperatures, snow and FAA armament seen on US Armed Forces Day at Wethersfield; left below, a Sea Vixen with Firestreak, rockets and long-range tank; right, a Scimitar with Sidewinder severe turbulence were the rule, and land ing conditions both ashore and on board invariably difficult, the flying hours from the ship were the highest on record and free from all accidents. The average service ability rate was over 80 per cent, which in itself is a remarkable achievement, con sidering the problems which have to be faced in the Antarctic." Air Force station since 1913, is closing down this year and a ceremony to mark the occasion is being held on Thursday, June 21, at 4 p.m. Any past station commander who has not received an invitation to attend is asked to contact the adjutant.
