893 FLIGHT International, 7 June 1962 Westland Wessex 2 cruising speed, 115 m.p.h.; max rate of climb at s.l., l,750ft/min; hovering ceiling out of ground effect, 5,000ft; range (standard tankage), 345 miles. Wessex 2 First flown on January 18 this year, this version of the Wessex is powered by two coupled 1,350 s.h.p. Bristol Siddeley (D.H.) Gnome shaft turbines, torque- limited to produce a total max output of 1,550 s.h.p. It will be capable of carrying a realistic payload in high-temperature and high-altitude conditions, and its ability to fly with either engine stopped makes it suitable for both civil and military use. In August 1961 the RAF ordered a sub stantial number of Wessex HC.2s for transport, casualty evacuation and general- purpose duties. The performance figures given below are estimated at the full gross weight, which is 9001b greater than that of the Wessex 1. • Rotor diam, 56ft; length, 65ft 9£in; height, 14ft 3in; gross weight, 13,5001b; empty weight, 8,0501b; max speed, 120 m.p.h.; econ cruising speed, 115 m.p.h.; max rate of climb at s.l., l,540ft/min; hovering ceiling out of ground effect, 10,000ft; range (standard tankage), 345 miles. Whirlwind Still available for commercial use, the piston-engined Whirlwind is a 9/12-seat British-built version of the Sikor sky S-55, with either a 600 h.p. Pratt & Whitney R-1340 (Whirlwind Series 1) or a 750 h.p. Alvis Leonides Major 755 (Whirl wind Series 2) engine. The following figures are for the Series 2:— • Rotor diam, 53ft; length of fuselage, 41ft 8Jin; height 13ft 3in; gross weight, 8,0001b; empty weight, 5,3751b; max speed, 106 m.p.h.; cruising speed, 86 m.p.h.; max rate of climb at s.l., l,060ft/min; hovering ceiling out of ground effect, 3,900ft; max range (standard tankage), 335 miles. Gnome-Whirlwind By taking advantage of the compact, lightweight power of the 1,050 s.h.p. Bristol Siddeley (D.H.) Gnome H.1000 shaft turbine, Westland have been able to offer major improvements in pay- load and performance in this version of the Whirlwind. It is available either new or as a simple conversion of Series 1 and 2 aircraft. The RAF has ordered a large number of new Gnome-Whirlwinds and is having its piston-engined models re-engined. Deliver ies to 225 Sqn of Transport Command, under the designation Whirlwind HAR.10, began in the autumn of 1961. Others will be used by Coastal Command for search and rescue, and the first of these went to the helicopter OTU at St Mawgan in February of this year. The first commercial models, known as Whirlwind Series 3s, were delivered in December 1961 to Ghana, which has ordered six, including one furnished to VIP standards. • Rotor diam, 53ft; length of fuselage, 44ft 2in; height, 13ft 3in; gross weight, 8,0001b; empty weight, 4,9521b; max speed, 106 m.p.h.; cruising speed, 104 m.p.h.; max rate of climb at s.l., 1.200ft/min; hovering ceiling out of ground effect, 7,000ft; range (standard tank age), 316 miles. Scout and Wasp Designed by the Saunders-Roe Division of Westland, this neat 5/6-seat general-purpose helicopter is in quantity production in the Fairey Divi sion works at Hayes, whence the "first off" was delivered for flight testing last October. It is powered by a 1,050 s.h.p. Bristol Siddeley (Blackburn) Nimbus shaft turbine, torque-limited to 685 s.h.p. and is available with full blind-flying equipment, including autopilot and autostabilizer, a Lucas air- operated hoist for rescue work, and rotor de-icing system. A substantial production order for the Scout AH.l was placed by the Army in September 1960. One year later, after evaluation at sea of three lower-powered P.531-0/N pre-production aircraft, West- land received a further large order from the Royal Navy for a version designated Wasp AS.l. This differs from the Scout in having a folding tail and special under carriage for deck operations. It is intended mainly for anti-submarine strike duties from small platforms on frigates, and the Wasp has already proved its capabilities for this work with a series of more than 300 deck landings, 10 per cent of them at night, on the Navy's new general-purpose frigate Ashanti. Armament can include two homing torpedoes or four 0.5in guns and up to six air-to-surface missiles. Both the Scout and Wasp can be used for a variety of secondary duties such as observation, freighting with a 1,5001b internal or external load, search and rescue, training, and casualty evacuation (carrying two stretchers and a medical attendant inside the cabin). • Rotor diam, 32ft 3in; length of fuselage, 30ft 5in; height, 8ft lOin; normal gross weight, 5,0001b; empty weight, 3,1391b; max speed, 138 m.p.h.; cruising speed, 132 m.p.h.; max rate of climb at s.l., 2,000ft/min; hovering ceiling in ground effect, 17,000ft; max range (standard tankage), 320 miles. There has been no news of any further development of the Baumgartl PB-64 or the IPD Beija-Flor during the past twelve Baumgartl PB-64 *iii.iiiuii.i,: ~m^L^.-^K- Westland Scout Westland Gnome-Whirlwind
